[A]List Game Marketing Summit: Pachter's Bold Keynote - [a]listdaily

Michael Pachter, Managing Director of Equity Research at Wedbush Securities, gave the keynote address at the [a]list game marketing summit in San Francisco on Thursday, and he had a number of provocative observations for the assembled crowd of game marketers.

Pachter lead off with his prediction for the industry standby of packaged console products.?I think console packaged products are going to be around for a long, long, long time,? said Pachter ?When they do go away, they're going to be replaced by console download products. People are going to have that $60 ? soon to be $70 ? game play experience as long as there's somebody who has a vested interest in making sure that happens.?

Pachter took exception with an observation by David Cole that was cited by Steve Fowler of the Ayzenberg Group, who introduced Pachter and the summit. ?I think David Cole said something that's wrong. He said there could be a social bubble, because all the games are copycat, there's no originality... you could absolutely say that about first-person shooters. You could. They're all the same game. Except they're not. I would say that about Hidden Chronicles and Gardens of Time. I love Zynga games, and I get why they're doing them,? Pachter said. He followed with double-edged compliment: ?Zynga actually does a great job with their games. Even when they rip somebody off, they do a better job than the person they ripped off.? That's one quote that Zynga probably won't be using in their marketing materials.

Pachter went on to compare the evolution of the gaming industry to the evolution of the casino gaming industry. Pachter noted that to be a successful player, games like poker require a deep knowledge of the game and a lot of play time to develop the necessary skills. (He also said that he paid his through law school as a poker player, earning $250,000 per year for three years of law school.) Poker is played in long sessions; you don't just sit down and play for a few minutes, Pachter noted. Casinos all have a poker area now, but they also have table games like craps and roulette, which are kind of complicated but not as highly skilled as poker. You spend time playing them, but you don't have to spend as much time as when you play poker. The biggest area in casinos is devoted to slot machines, which anyone can sit down and play for a minute or two or for hours.

How is all of this like the gaming industry? Pachter explains: ?Texas Hold'em is like playing an MMO. Exactly like one. Nobody does it for five minutes, and when you play it you are immersed in it. The same kind of people do both, obsessive-compulsive people.? In Pachter's analogy, the table games are console games. ?You cannot just start playing Call of Duty. You tend not to play it for a few minutes,? said Pachter. In both cases you have to learn something about the games and develop some skills, and you tend to play them for at least an hour or two.

Then you have slots, which Pachter says ?are just like casual, social , and mobile games. Everyone can figure them out, and they're really mindless.? When Las Vegas was just table games, that was like the game industry with just console games. ?Console games were really like Vegas thirty years ago. The 90s was when the MMO started to appear, and that's when the poker rooms started to appear in casinos,? said Pachter. Now we see that casinos have devoted a huge amount of space to slots, and they generate a lot of profit for the casinos because they are so easy to play for anyone, and you can play them for a minute or for hours. The casinos still have the table games, and they still have the poker rooms, and they'll continue to draw a good audience even though the slots may get the majority of the floor space.

Pachter now sees social games as a good business that will continue to grow, especially when the social game companies are able to refine their business model. ?Free-to-play is free, and that's a mistake,? said Pachter. ?Free to play should not be free. In Western cultures, we get nothing for free. It's ad-supported if you don't pay for it.? He pointed out that we have no problem watching an ad in order to listen to music on the radio, or to watch television, or see movies on TV. The scoial game market needs to take that to heart, according to Pachter. ?If publishers and developers can figure out a way to monetize the 98 percent of the people who don't pay, this is a great industry to work in.?

Pachter had quite a lot to say about the console market, too. ?Smartphones have absolutely destroyed the casual market for consoles. They also killed the casual Wii game,? Pachter noted. ?The market for hardcore games is bigger today than it's been. Nintendo inflated the numbers with a bunch of great casual experiences, which have been replaced by social games, and smartphone games, and tablet games. I can tell you that the women that were playing the Wii Fit are now playing FarmVille, CityVille, CastleVille. Wii was a bubble. The Wii bubble has burst.?

We took advantage of the question period to ask about the next generation of consoles. New consoles are in the wings, the Wii U's been announced, but pricing hasn't been announced. There are rumors that Microsoft's next console might be as much as $600. Could the next generation of consoles really be successful at that kind of price point?

Pachter didn't hesitate to share his thoughts on the next generation of consoles. ?Since Microsoft hasn't settled on specs, I think that's probably premature,? said Pachter, referring to the idea of a $600 price point for the Xbox 720. He moved on to his thoughts on the Wii U. ?I think Nintendo's in disarray. I think the idea that we don't know the price point yet, but we do know what the console is, is just sad. I think they've completely blown that. It's gonna launch at $249; because it has to. They're dead if they launch at $259, I think they're toast then. I think they're toast anyway.? Why? ?I think the Xbox 360 with Kinect will be priced below that by the time they launch.?

Pachter went on to talk about the next console generation in general. ?I'm a little worried about the next generation because I actually think we've gotten to the point where people don't care any more. Look at television displays; we're at 1080p (2K) already and they're already talking about 4K and then 8K. Nobody's buying a 4K TV or an 8K TV in the next ten years. They're $15,000! All the consoles now are running in 1080p, so what are we gonna get? 60 frames per second standard, and 120 frames per second occasionally? Who cares? Have you played NBA 2K? It looks like a frickin' movie. The facial animation isn't great, but the game looks like a movie. It doesn't get any better than that. I'm actually worried about them in general.?

Pachter finally circled around to the pricing question. ?So the answer to your question is, yeah, price I think is everything, because I don't think features matter that much. I think what you're going to see in this next generations of consoles is this: 4 GB hard drive, except for Nintendo which will be no hard drive, and maybe some type of built-in cell access or something, some way to connect with the television without wires, it'll be like little features... but as far as gameplay, you're talking about faster framerates, but I'm not even sure what manufacturers want. We're in a really interesting time. I think the manufacturers better figure it out and better let consumers know, because we don't want to make them to wait for something that's not coming. If Microsoft launches at $600 it's over.?

Nintendo's pricing of the Wii U will be a very important part of the puzzle; not just the price, but when they choose to announce it, and then how Sony and Microsoft respond. The holiday market in 2012 will be very, very interesting to watch.

Lev Raphael: Family Secrets: The Mystery My Mother Left Behind

My late mother loved the New York Times crossword and she loved reading mysteries. Born in Poland, she said the puzzle helped her perfect her English; she never explained the specific appeal of crime novels, but she was a huge fan of Agatha Christie, John Creasey, Frances and Richard Lockridge, and Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo. I read almost all the mystery library books she brought home; they were always better than the books assigned in school. On my own, I discovered the comic mysteries of Phoebe Atwood Taylor. While my mother enjoyed a good joke and had an Imogene Coca kind of laugh, those books weren't serious enough for her.

It wasn't until after my mother died in 1999 that I discovered profound and unsettling mysteries in her own life that I'm still trying to unravel. My mother was a Holocaust survivor. She lost her family, her home, her freedom -- and would have lost her life if the war had lasted any longer than it did. She spoke about those war years sparingly, and when she did, I was too young or too overwhelmed to ask the right questions that would have yielded more information.

Going through her things after the funeral, I found something shocking in her closet. My mother had kept the concentration camp uniform she was wearing when she was liberated by the Americans in April 1945. You've probably seen "dresses" like these in movies and documentaries: thin, crudely sewn, it was gray with purplish stripes (though the colors may have changed over the decades). My father told me she'd washed it after the war, but he couldn't say why she had kept this reminder of her horrible brutalization and the nightmare of seeing her world ground to dust.

I knew the names of the camps my mother had been in and contacted one via email but nobody could find records for her. This was troubling, since I knew that despite bombings and German attempts to destroy files, records existed for many camps. And then I tried again, this time using the number on her uniform.

A world of mysteries opened up to me. For at least part of the war, my mother, Helena Klaczko, was listed in several Nazi records as Lidja Garbel. How do I know this Garbel and my mother were the same woman? Because the insanely detailed prisoner card for my mother at Buchenwald lists her parents' name, her street address in Poland, her education and her birth date. All the information matches what I know to be fact. Whatever her name, the woman with that number on her camp dress was the woman listed on the card and indisputably my mother.

But why did she have another name? The mystery deepened when I discovered that in a transport from one camp to another, there was a woman whose number was right before my mother's and whose last name was also Garbel. So somehow, for some reason, my mother took this other woman's last name as hers. But why? And why Lidja? Was it possible there had been an actual Lidja Garbel whose name my mother had assumed for some reason? The sister of this Frida Garbel?

My father had no idea what the answers were or what any of it could mean. And when I told him that this same Buchenwald prisoner card said my mother was married to a Mikhail Garbel, whereabouts "unknown," he scoffed. "People said all kinds of things during the war."

I had written a handful of Nick Hoffman mysteries by this point, and even been reviewed in the New York Times my mother revered. Sadly, my mother never got to read any of them because she was so sick when they started coming. But nothing in any of them matched these real-life mysteries whose solutions I have pursued in many directions, without answer. Sometimes I wonder if there really was a Mikhail Garbel or even a Lidja Garbel, if both were completely invented. Sometimes I think, what if my mother was married before she met my father? Sometimes I think, "There's a book in this, if only I can find it." And I wonder if my mother read mysteries not just as a fan, but as someone who had turned her own life into something mysterious.

Video: Heart warning signs women might miss

>>> we're back now with important health news about a silent killer among women . heart disease is the number one killer in the u.s. in fact, it kills more women than all cancers combined. and a new study this week is highlighting why so many women are dying. serving as a warning to pay attention to what their bodies are telling them. we get that information tonight from dr. nancy sneiderman.

>> reporter: maxine levy remembers when she woke up with overwhelming nausea. she told her husband to call 911.

>> my husband looked at me and he said, have you lost your mind? i said, maybe. i said, but let's call 911 and see what they say.

>> reporter: at just 41 years old, maxine was having a heart attack .

>> that was not at all on my radar. not possible. i wasn't a smoker. i had low blood pressure . i didn't have diabetes.

>> reporter: she did not have chest pain . a new study shows 42% of women who arrive at the hospital already having a heart attack don't have that classic red flag . and once at the hospital nearly 15% of women die, compared with 10% of men. one reason is that women are more likely to have atypical symptoms. shortness of breath, light headedness, pain in the jaw, neck or arms, nausea, cold sweats and extreme fatigue. those symptoms which are most common in younger women are not always recognized as a serious threat.

>> this creates a perfect storm . because women get to the hospital later. they're traditionally sicker when they arrive.

>> reporter: recognizing atypical symptoms of the heart attack is one thing. but empowering women to act on them and get medical help, well, that's a completely different matter.

>> research has shown that only 50% of them would actually call 911 if they thought they were experiencing a heart attack .

>> reporter: linda bugby ignored her symptoms for years.

>> overtired, tightness in my chest. pain in my jaw. but i thought it was heart burn .

>> reporter: she was dying nosed with heart disease . but says she paid a hefty price for putting things off as long as she did.

>> i medicated myself with ant ac -- ant acids and knowing that it was probably serious.

>> reporter: gender can make a difference. knowing those differences and acting on them can save your life.

>> we can't give you those life-saving therapies when you show up at the hospital too late.

>> reporter: dr. nancy snyderman , new york.

12 hot springs worth traveling to see

The Banff Upper Hot Springs in Canada were considered a sacred healing site by the area's native residents.

By Sandra Ramani, Budget Travel

In the world of spa treatments, it all goes back to water and travel. After all, the word "spa" itself comes from Spa, Belgium, a popular watering spot back in the 1600s. In the centuries since, cultures all over the globe turned to natural, mineral-rich waters to treat a wide array of concerns, from the medical (sinus issues, muscle and joint pain) to cosmetic (skin clarity, psoriasis).

Slideshow: See the 12?enticing hot springs

The ancient Romans turned soaking into an art form -- and a part of daily life -- and as the Roman Empire grew, baths known as thermae were established wherever mineral springs were discovered. Over the years, many of these ancient hot spring towns grew into wellness resorts, particularly once European doctors started recommending "water cures" in the 18th century. With so many steamy spots to choose from in the world, we've narrowed our list down to natural hot, mineral, and geothermal springs in historic, picturesque locations, including two right here in the U.S. Here are some of the prettiest places to jump in and say "ahhh."

Banff Upper Hot Springs, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

Surrounded by dramatic alpine views, these hot springs in western Canada were considered a sacred healing site by the area's native residents. In 1882, workers building the Canadian Pacific Railway happened upon two of the spring pools at the base of Sulphur Mountain -- and the news quickly spread. The first European visitors arrived in 1884, and two years later construction on a bathhouse begun. The Banff Upper Hot Springs bathhouse, completed in the mid-1930s, has been declared a protected Heritage Building.

The benefits: Located at 5,200 feet above sea level, Canada's highest natural springs are rich in such minerals as sodium, magnesium, bicarbonate, calcium and sulfate, which have skin healing and muscle-relaxing properties. Despite their long journey from deep underground, these waters are also the hottest in the Rocky Mountain range, clocking in at up to a muscle-warming 104 degrees.

How to soak: The Banff Upper Hot Springs complex -- which includes one large pool and a bathhouse -- is located about a mile and a half south of the town center, and is accessible by public Banff Roam Bus service; buses run every 40 minutes. The pool is fed by water directly from the spring source, which lies in a protected part of the National Park. (www.hotsprings.ca, $7.30 entrance fee.)

Ma'In Hot Springs, Jordan

Like those of their neighbor, the Dead Sea, the healing powers of these desert oasis springs are biblical: King Herod would travel here often for medical treatment and legend has it that Salome did her famous dance in his nearby villa. Since then, kings, queens and commoners of all types have come to enjoy the hot and cold springs, many of which tumble down from picturesque waterfalls.

The benefits: Known locally as Hammamat Ma'in, the springs originate from winter rainfalls in Jordan's highland plains. As the water makes its way through the Wadi Zarqa Ma'in valley, underground lava fissures help heat them (temps range from 104 to 145 degrees) and infuse them with skin-healing minerals?such as?hydrogen sulfide, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Stand under one of the hyperthermal waterfalls for a natural deep-tissue massage.

How to soak: The springs are located in a desert valley near the Dead Sea, about 866 feet below sea level; it's about a 20-minute drive from the town of Madaba and one hour from capital city Amman. The public bathing complex at Hammamat Ma'in includes Roman baths at the base of a waterfall (visitjordan.com; $14 entrance fee). The facility is popular with local families and can get crowded on weekends. ?For a more private experience, check-in to the Evason Ma'In Hot Springs resort next door, where guests enjoy after-hours entry to the main springs, as well as access to falls and pools located on the hotel grounds. (011-962-5-324-5500; sixsenses.com/Evason-Ma-In; from $207 per night.)

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Modern-day Mexico is home to hundreds of mineral spring sites, and it's said that the tradition of soaking in these balnearios can be traced far back as the Aztecs (16th-century emperor Montezuma was a fan). Today, some of the most popular, and prettiest, sites lay just outside San Miguel de Allende in central Mexico. Though native peoples were surely making use of these thermal waters for centuries, it wasn't until the town's "re-discovery" by artists and Mexican movie stars in the 1950s that formal spas and baths were constructed.

The benefits: The area around San Miguel de Allende features thermal, alkaline, sulfur and freshwater springs, though the first two are most popular for bathing. Despite legends that these waters have "age-reversing" effects, most bathers come to relax under the heated falls and soak up the generally therapeutic natural minerals.

How to soak: There are several mineral springs along the road from San Miguel de Allende to Dolores Hidalgo that are open to the public for a fee. Escondido Place is a favorite and has five open-air thermal pools, three covered springs, and lush grounds perfect for picnics.?escondidoplace.com; $7.50 entrance fee.

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

A heating company formed the lagoon (which holds 1.5 million gallons of sea- and freshwater) to explore geothermal heating methods in the late 1970s. By 1981, people were bathing in the lagoon-and noticing marked improvements in skin conditions. The site became a popular tourist attraction, with official public facilities opening in 1987 and a full spa in 1999.

The benefits: With its volcanic rocks, electric-green moss and steaming waters, the area around the Blue Lagoon looks like something from another planet. Fans of the waters agree that the results are otherworldly. High amounts of silica help exfoliate skin, strengthen its barrier function and heal inflammation, while minerals from the seawater revitalize skin. Microorganisms found here also help reduce signs of UV damage and stimulate collagen production. Skin care products made with the therapeutic waters make great souvenirs.

How to soak: The facility, 40 minutes from the center of Reykjavik, includes steam baths, sauna, relaxation areas and lagoon pools. Enjoy the massaging waterfalls and lather on some pure geothermal silica mud (provided free of charge). In-water massages and other spa treatments are available for an additional fee. (bluelagoon.com; $39 entrance fee.)

Budapest, Hungary

Ancient Celtic settlers were the first to make use of the therapeutic waters (they named the area Ak-Ink, or "ample water"), followed by the Romans, who built the first official baths and re-dubbed the place Aquincum. Though the bathing culture continued through centuries of Hungarian and Turkish rule, the traditions floundered in the 18th century-until the re-discovery of some thermal springs in the 1800s. A scientific interest in the benefits led to the construction of some of the city's most famous bathhouses, some which remain today.

The benefits: The thermal waters are rich in a variety of minerals, including fluoride, calcium, hydro-carbonate, sodium, magnesium? and sulphate. The combination has proved effective in treating chronic arthritis and other joint illnesses and orthopedic woes. The water from drinking wells is also high in similar minerals, and is good for treating gastric ulcers and various internal inflammations.

How to soak: There are enough mineral springs under the city of Budapest to feed more than 50 public baths and pools, numerous private spas and countless drinking fountains. We suggest the stunning Szechenyi Bath, which opened in 1913. The complex includes three large outdoor pools, heated to varying degrees, plus several pools with jets and waterfalls, saunas, and spots for aqua-aerobics and other therapies. (szechenyibath.com; entrance fee from $12.50.)

Bath, England

Archeological evidence suggests activity around these springs in southwest England as far back as 8000 B.C. Those water-crazy Romans constructed the first formal baths in the first century AD (visitors can tour the remains today) and the baths' popularity didn't wane in the centuries that followed. As Jane Austen fans know, the waters were popular throughout the 1700s and 1800s with travelers looking to "take the waters." In 2006, after more than a decade of renovations, the Thermae Bath Spa complex opened in some of the most historic bath sites.

The benefits: The three wellheads under the center of Bath are sourced by ancient rainwater that has made its way up through the region's limestone faults. The waters (which can be as warm as 117 degrees) contain more than 42 minerals, including sulphate, calcium, silica, iron and chloride. Doctors have sent patients here for centuries to treat rheumatism, psoriasis, gout and even infertility; injured WWII servicemen also came here for rehab. These days, most soakers seek relaxation and relief from skin issues.

How to soak: The Thermae Bath Complex is right in the center of Bath, about a 15-minute walk from the railway station. The main building houses the largest of the thermal baths, the New Royal Bath, has a whirlpool as well as a "lazy river," a heated rooftop pool, aromatherapy steam rooms and a full-service spa (thermaebathspa.com; entrance fees from $34). Across the street, the smaller (and very basic) thermal Cross Bath stands at the site where ancient Celts and Romans honored their respective goddesses (thermaebathspa.com; $21 for 90 minutes).

Arenal Hot Springs, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is home to six active volcanoes and 61 more that are dormant or extinct. Thanks to all this geothermal activity, the country also boasts several hot springs sites, most notably around the Arenal Volcano in the northwest. Technically still active (it's said to be "resting"), Arenal's heat and minerals infuse streams that flow through the marshes and grasslands at its base. Several hotels offer access to the springs, but the original-and the gold standard-is the Tabac?n Grand Spa Thermal Resort, opened in 1993.

The benefits: Tabac?n's hot springs are 97 percent rainwater that has sunk deep into?the earth and been heated, and the remaining 3 percent is magma-based. As the mixture rises back to the surface, it brings with it?minerals. The springs are naturally heated to a muscle-relaxing 77 to 122 degrees and the high levels of hydrothermal flora and fauna strengthen the skin's defense system and repair surface damage. Even better, the springs are low in sulfur. Meaning you won't stink after taking a dip.

How to soak: If staying at the luxury resort is not in the budget, buy a day pass to enjoy the dozen mineral pools (including one with thermal water slide and another with a swim-up bar), three thermal waterfalls, and sweeping volcano views. (tabacon.com; from $60 for a day pass.)

Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado

Back in the early 1500s the Ute Indians enjoyed these southwest Colorado hot springs, which sit about 8,600 feet above sea level. Ore miners (and speculators) came to the region in the 1880s, and a private homestead was established on the land that's now Dunton. The owners recognized the hot springs' moneymaking potential and started charging a nickel to take a dip. The first "hot tub" was built in a log-lined pit, followed by various shack bathhouses. By 1918, though, the mining boom was bust and the town deserted. The current owners took over in 1994 and spent seven years turning the whole town into an upscale resort.

The benefits:?The naturally heated Dunton springs are high in iron and magnesium, with trace amounts of lithium. Along with the therapeutic benefits of the minerals and heat (temps range from 85 to 106 degrees), soakers get the added bonus of calcium bicarbonate, which reputedly helps open peripheral blood vessels and improve circulation.

How to soak: Dunton's deluxe cabins start at $550, but day passes are available for travelers who aren't spending the night or booked in the spa (treatments are $185). Once on site, you can choose to soak in one of several pools, including the renovated 19th Century bathhouse, two outdoor pools, or directly at the source. (duntonhotsprings.com; $115 for a day pass, including lunch.)

Saturnia, Italy

Legend has it that hilltop Saturnia's thermal springs bubble up at the exact spot where Jupiter's thunderbolt fell in a battle with Saturn. The Bronze Age Etruscans were the first to partake of the waters, and even built a temple on the site to thank the gods for this gift; later, the Romans constructed what some say was the world's first public bathhouse. After getting a bad rep in the more puritanical 14th century (some thought the hot waters marked the gates of Hell), the springs were re-discovered in the 1800s and continue to be the Tuscan town's claim to fame.

The benefits: The waters originate from Monte Amiata, a dormant volcano that still pumps water from its craters and rivers. Along with a mineral mix including sulfur, bicarbonate and alkaline, the water contains also plankton. The combination?also?is beneficial for muscle, joint, cardiovascular and respiratory issues.

How to soak: The stunning Cascate del Mulino, just outside of town, is a series of thermal waterfalls that cascade into natural pools of travertine rock. The water bubbles up at about 99 degrees year-round, making this a popular relaxation spot even in the winter, and at night (access is available 24/7, at your own risk.) There aren't any facilities at the park-just strip down to your bathing suit and hop in. (cascate-del-mulino.info; free.)

Hot Springs, Arkansas

Evidence suggests that a variety of Native American tribes came together in peace to bathe in these waters in the Ouachita mountain valley. A naturalist and a chemist were sent to the region following the Louisiana Purchase, and sent word in 1804 of steaming waters and natural minerals. By 1828, a simple hotel had been built to shelter bathers and over time dozens of spas were opened, with the additional enticement of horse racing and gambling. The casinos aren't as prominent now, but you can still stroll streets lined with Victorian houses and historic hotels.

The benefits: The town's thermal waters are sourced from 47 springs on the western slopes of Hot Springs Mountain. As they make their way up through the earth, the springs are infused with an array of minerals and heated to about 143 degrees; the combination has proved effective in treating symptoms of arthritis, gout and joint and rheumatic issues. You are welcome to fill up on cold mineral drinking water at several pumps around town.

How to soak: There are several hotels and spas in town that make use of the thermal waters, but for a more traditional experience, head into Hot Springs National Park. Get a history lesson at the Fordyce Bathhouse, now a museum. Then get in the waters yourself at the Quapaw Bath. First opened in 1922, the facilities include private mineral baths ? the perfect choice for those not excited about soaking with strangers. (quapawbaths.com, $30 for a private mineral bath.)

Kusatsu, Japan

The mountain town of Kusatsu in central Japan is one of the oldest hot springs sites in the country, with claims of travelers soaking here as early as the 2nd century. Samurai came in the 1600s, looking to heal their wounds. By the 1700s Kusatsu was a booming resort destination for those suffering from red light district illnesses like syphilis. The interest became scientific in 1876 when a German doctor began researching the healing powers of the waters, and helped create more targeted medical treatments using the springs.

The benefits: Kusatsu's location near one active volcano and two dormant ones means there are more than 100 springs and baths, called onsen. Full of sulfur and healing minerals from the volcanic ground, the waters treat bruises, sprains, stiff muscles and burns, as well as chronic indigestion. Temperatures can reach a scalding 129 degrees, so bathing is not allowed in the hottest pools.

How to soak: There are several public bathhouses in Kusatsu, one of the most popular being Sainokawara Rotenburo. This open-air bath in Sainokawara Park can accommodate up to 100 bathers and is open year-round (japan-guide.com; $6 entrance fee). Otakinoyu has outdoor pools and a wooden bathhouse with seven tubs of varying temperatures (japan-guide.com; $10 entrance fee). Located near a source spring, Shirohatanoyu, one of the 18 free local communal baths, has two small tubs (japan-guide.com; free).

Yambajan, Tibet

Tibet can be a complicated country to get to (see our advice here). Once there, you can visit numerous hot spring sites, with Yambajan easily being the most picturesque. Glaciers, ancient forests and snow-capped hills surround the town, which sits on a cold plateau at the base of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains. There are eight springs here, all with evocative names like Bread-Steaming Hot Spring (where bread can be cooked over the steam heat), Vinegar Boiling Spring and Fish-Cooking River (which runs so hot, fish get boiled and float to the surface).

The benefits: Yambajan is home to several types of thermal waters, including geysers and springs ranging from warm to boiling (the water in the main bathing pools is cooled in open-air cisterns before it is deemed safe for soaking). While the springs are high in sulfur and other minerals thought to be therapeutic, most travelers come to soak up the muscle-relaxing heat and peaceful atmosphere. Note that because of the high-altitude, long soaks and vigorous exercise in the hot waters are not recommended and you should drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

How to soak: The safest place for soaking is in one of the indoor and open-air bathing and swimming pools that have been built along the geothermal field. For the best views, come in the early morning, when the steam rising off the pools seems to melt into the snow-capped mountains in the background. Yambajan is accessible via public bus from Lhasa. (tibettravel.info; $5 entrance fee.)

Lake Simcoe Arms: Pair your food with the right beer

You often hear about pairing wines with food, but how about pairing beers with food? Just like with wine, specific flavours of beer go best with specific foods and some food and drink experts say beer is actually a better pairing option than wine, since there are so many more flavour varieties with beer. Unlike with wine, which is made solely from grapes (although occasionally, fruits such as blueberries, raspberries and kiwis are made into wine), beer gets its flavour from sweet-tasting barley, bitter-tasting hops and heavy-tasting yeast, as well as spices, nuts, chocolate and fruits.

Generally, pairing beer with wine comes down to whether you prefer complimentary or contrasting flavours. Complimentary means that the beer and food have similar tastes (light beer with a light dish, for example). Contrasting tastes, on the other hand means that the food and beer go together in an opposites-attract manner (think of salty-sweet combinations, which often go together quite well).

Some popular beer/food recommendations are:

  • Pair ales with burgers, wings, fried foods and strong cheeses.

?

  • Pair lagers with fish, grilled chicken or pork, light pasta dishes and spicy foods.

?

  • Pair pilsners with salad, seafood and spicy foods.

?

  • Pair porters with smoked and barbecued meats.

?

  • Pair stouts with roasted or smoked meats, salty foods, heavy stews and dessert.

?

  • Pair wheat beers with soups, salads, vegetarian dishes and sweet and fruity flavours.

?

  • Pair fruit-flavoured beers with salads, white meat and heavily herbed or spiced dishes.

Play around with different flavours and decide what you like best. There?s no right or wrong answer when it comes to personal taste.

The Lake Simcoe Arms is a good place to taste test different beers and dishes. Try one of their beers on tap paired with one of the British-inspired food options on their menu. Visit them online at www.lakesimcoearms.com.

Figuring It Out: on speaking... the Public kind

Public Speaking
When I was in High school, I took a Public Speaking class. I took it again in college. I don't remember very much from either class.

I have always loved to write. I think I wrote my first poem in 4th grade. I've been singing?for as long as I can remember. And reading and art have been interests of mine ever since I could read and hold a pencil in my hand. People say that if you do all of these things, (reading and writing in particular) then Public Speaking should be added to your repertoire. (Really?)

Loneliness
I am a pretty sensitive girl. I am shy, but I am also an extrovert. Go figure. I am terrible at initiating conversations with strangers, and sometimes, I hide behind my husband, or I make him do the talking. I don't always answer my door when people I don't know come knocking on it and I HATE talking on the phone.

You know that time during church when you are supposed to welcome the person next to you or go say "hello" to the new family that just walked in? This is the part of the church service when I cringe. I hate that about myself. There are tons of people that I miss out on all the time because I hide behind the coffee maker. I am not advocating "shyness" by any means. It's a weakness of mine and I'm working on it.

The funny thing is that I also suffer from loneliness. If I am feeling depressed or if I don't have energy to do things, it's usually when I haven't been around people for a while. (And when I say a while, I mean that?every few days or so, I need some kind of interaction that goes beyond my home life.) I thrive on the energy I get from other people. I need it. I need to have funny conversations, meaningful conversations, and deep heart-to-hearts if I am going to be a productive person in society. Facebook is great for people like me, because you don't have to look people in the eye...how sad is that?

So, knowing this about myself, I try to get involved in small groups as much as I can. I find things that I think I might be good at and I jump in. In fact, this week I have?three nights already taken up by meetings with other groups of people. (It's going to be a great week!) But part of joining things, means there will probably come a time when I have to step outside of my comfort zone.

Panic City
Over the last month or so, a friend asked me to do something that would require me?to speak?in front of 100+ people for possibly?two minutes. Two minutes doesn't seem very long, but when you are terrified,?two minutes becomes a lifetime. And speaking in front of any size group really freaks me out.

Like I said, I have been singing in front of people for most of my life, but I rarely speak words into the microphone. I think this is true for me, because singing is usually with a band of musicians...which means I am not alone up there. I have people with me trying to accomplish the same things as me.

But, life is about pressing through, finding new outlets, taking risks, and so?I thought, Sure! Why not?

The night before my speech (if you can even call it that) my stomach was hating me. I was so nervous. I tossed and turned in my sleep all night. I woke up way too early and couldn't go back to sleep. It's not?as if?I didn't prepare either. I probably over prepared considering it was only two?minutes long.?It should have been a piece of cake. What was I so worried about?

The morning came, and I was a ball of nerves. I think I ran to the bathroom three?times before leaving my house. As I sat there, waiting to be called up, I was on the verge of tears. I just wanted it to be over. I even thought about backing out. But I couldn't. I was so afraid of messing up my words and looking like a total moron, and backing out would probably seal the deal that I in fact was a moron.

Finally, the moment came. It was time. Everything became fuzzy. I walked up to the microphone and I couldn't see a single person's face.?I remember my mouth feeling very dry. My legs felt like they were going to collapse. I had never experienced anything like it... not even in my High school/college speech classes. I had to hold my notes and I could see them shaking from being in my hands. I opened my mouth, and I think words came out?and then... it was over.?It was all over. I had made it through with all of my body parts still in place. The floor was still beneath me. The world was still spinning.

Now, whether or not it was any good is another story and honestly as that moment, I didn't even care anymore. I went home, and took a nice little nap.

So what did I learn? I learned that the world isn't going to end if people see my weaknesses. And I also learned that risk is worth it, no matter the outcome.?Because, If I never get out there, if I never make friends, or push myself to take risks, if I don't risk?showing the world what kind of fool I can be, I will always be alone. I would rather fall on my face and have people there to pick me up, than hide in my room?all by myself. Even if this is not something that I ever get better at or feel comfortable with, I am glad I did it. Mission accomplished!

Question:
What kinds of risks are you taking? I want to know your stories, because our stories are what remind us that we aren't alone. Come self-depricate with me.

Rick Santorum questions Obama's Christian values

(AP) ? Lashing out on two fronts, Rick Santorum on Saturday questioned President Barack Obama's Christian values and attacked GOP rival Mitt Romney's Olympics leadership as he courted tea party activists and evangelical voters in Ohio, "ground zero" in the 2012 nomination fight.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator known for his social conservative views, said Obama's agenda is based on "some phony theology. Not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology." He later suggested that the president practices a different kind of Christianity.

"In the Christian church there are a lot of different stripes of Christianity," he said. "If the president says he's a Christian, he's a Christian."

The Obama campaign said the comments represent "the latest low in a Republican primary campaign that has been fueled by distortions, ugliness, and searing pessimism and negativity."

Santorum was forced on his heels in recent days after a top supporter suggested women use aspirin to prevent pregnancy.

In Ohio, a Super Tuesday prize, he shifted decidedly to offense before friendly crowds. Trailing Romney in money and campaign resources, Santorum is depending on the tea party movement and religious groups to deliver a victory March 6 in the Midwestern contest.

More delegates will be awarded in Ohio than in any other state except Georgia in the opening months of the Republican campaign. Ohio and Georgia are two of the 10 contests scheduled for March 6, a benchmark for the primary campaign that often decides who can continue to the next level.

Santorum has surged in recent opinion polls after capturing Republican caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado and a non-binding primary in Missouri on Feb. 7. Several polls have shown him ahead in Romney's native state of Michigan, where primary voters cast ballots a week from Tuesday.

Obama's campaign team has responded by starting to consider the possibility that Santorum rather than Romney could be the Republican nominee. The Chicago-based organization has begun scrutinizing Santorum's past record and asked its Pennsylvania allies to look for information that might be used against Santorum in future ads and speeches.

Even as he criticized Obama, Santorum also went after one of Romney's most promoted achievements ? his leadership at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

"One of Mitt Romney's greatest accomplishments, one of the things he talks about most is how he heroically showed up on the scene and bailed out and resolved the problems of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games," Santorum said. "He heroically bailed out the Salt Lake City Olympic Games by heroically going to Congress and asking them for tens of millions of dollars to bail out the Salt Lake games ? in an earmark, in an earmark for the Salt Lake Olympic games."

The Romney campaign does not dispute that congressional earmarks helped save the games. But they noted that Santorum voted for those earmarks, among many others, when he was a senator.

"Sometimes when you shoot from the hip, you end up shooting yourself in the foot," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said. "There is a pretty wide gulf between seeking money for post-9/11 security at the Olympics and seeking earmarks for polar bear exhibits at the Pittsburgh Zoo."

Santorum used a later appearance before the Ohio Christian Alliance to go after Romney for using his financial advantage as "as a club to beat anyone who gets in his way." But he saved his most pointed criticism for Obama, suggesting that the Democratic president's health care overhaul encouraged abortions by requiring insurance plans to cover prenatal screenings.

"It saves money in health care. Why? Because free pre-natal testing ends up in more abortions and therefore less care that has to be done because we cull the ranks of the disabled from our society," Santorum said. "That too is part of ObamaCare. Another hidden message as to what Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

Santorum planned to finish his day in Akron before heading to Georgia on Sunday. While 63 delegates are at stake in Ohio, Georgia offers 76.

"There's no state that can shout louder. You are the biggest state. You've got the biggest trove of delegates," Santorum told the Brown County Republican Party on Friday night. "This is ground zero. Ohio."

Questions about whether Santorum can sustain his rise in the polls come amid signs of stress within his campaign, mainly disorganization. Romney's machine, coupled with new scrutiny for Santorum's view of social issues as well as governmental policies, will give Santorum little margin for error.

As an example, one misstep by a Santorum supporter kept the former senator off message at times for two days.

Foster Friess, the main donor behind Santorum's "super PAC," created a stir Thursday when he related on MSNBC an old joke about how aspirin used to be a method for birth control. "Back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraception," Friess said with a grin. "The gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly."

Friess apologized Friday in a blog post. But Santorum was repeatedly forced to distance himself from his surrogate's comments, which Santorum described as "a bad joke." The comments drew unwanted attention to Santorum's own musings about contraception and women's issues.

"Santorum has been in the position of explaining on all of these issues. And when you're explaining in politics, you're losing," said Phil Musser, a GOP strategist who doesn't work for either campaign.
