Saints practice in Cincinnati sun

CINCINNATI (AP) - Drew Brees called the Saints together before the start of practice on Tuesday, an uncharacteristic move by the quarterback to make sure that a team with so much experience in dealing with distractions was ready to handle the latest one.

The Saints practiced on the Cincinnati Bengals' grass fields downtown on a sunny, 87-degree afternoon while Hurricane Isaac bore down on New Orleans, finishing their preseason the way their entire offseason has gone. It's been one thing after another.

"A lot of this has been swirling around us and now all of a sudden, we're together and let's make sure we're out here with a purpose," Brees said, summing up his speech to the team. "It's to get better, not just to run around and run some plays.

"We've got a great group of guys, great leadership. Everybody understands we're going to weather the storm literally and find the way to make the most of it and make a positive out of a tough situation."

The Saints were forced to scramble when Isaac set course for New Orleans. They played a preseason game on Saturday night, then rearranged their plans and spent Sunday and Monday evacuating their families and preparing their homes for the storm.

They've been through this drill several times already. The Saints (No. 9 in the AP Pro32) played their entire 2005 season away from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina devastated the region. They practiced in Indianapolis the week before their 2008 season opener after Hurricane Gustav forced an evacuation.

Needing a place to practice for their final preseason game on Thursday in Tennessee, the Saints found enough open hotel rooms in Cincinnati and received the Bengals' permission to use the visiting locker room at Paul Brown Stadium and work out on the adjacent fields.

Most of the team flew into town on Monday night. A few players arrived on Tuesday morning after evacuating their families. Brees drove his family to Birmingham, Ala., then flew to Cincinnati on Tuesday morning.

When they weren't in meetings or practice, players were on their cell phones or watching the storm's progress on television.

"I'm glued to the TV, just trying to see where that storm's tracking and how strong it is and what the projections are," Brees said. "The crazy thing is we're going to play a game in Nashville and by Thursday evening, the (remnant) of the storm is supposed to be there. So you can't really escape it."

The Saints held a team meeting on Tuesday morning, followed by practice and another meeting. They planned a light workout on Wednesday morning before flying to Nashville for a game that will mark another transition for the team.

Head coach Sean Payton was suspended for the season as part of the Saints' bounty scandal. Assistant Joe Vitt took over on an interim basis, but will start his six-game suspension next week. Offensive line coach Aaron Kromer will be in charge while Vitt is away.

In addition to handling the Saints' hectic week, Vitt is figuring out how to turn things over to Kromer during the final preseason game.

"Really, I'm phasing out and he's phasing in," Vitt said. "His role will expand in the game on Thursday night. This is really the second phase of the transition that's going to have to take place."

So much has happened to the Saints in the offseason because of the bounty scandal that the schedule and travel changes didn't seem to bother them very much.

"There is always adversity, there is always something that happens," offensive tackle Zach Strief said. "This year it happened in the offseason.

"There is always going to be something, but I think the staff has been proactive on speaking about you'll be judged based on how you handle that. Some teams handle the adversity by tanking. Some teams handle the adversity by rising to the occasion. I think we've been pretty successful of that here in the past. This is just another one of those things."

Strief grew up in nearly Milford and took a few players out to a local chili parlor when they arrived on Monday night. He was having a ribs restaurant supply food on Tuesday.

Safety Roman Harper considered it part of being with the Saints.

"We are the best team in the league at mid-stream adjustments," Harper said.

The Bengals were leaving the stadium while the Saints arrived on buses Tuesday. Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth, who lives in Louisiana, was hoping to get in touch with some of the Saints during their brief visit.

"I know some of the guys up here and will try to reach out to them," Whitworth said. "They've had to deal with a lot over the years. It's just another year or another something that's probably made them as tough as they are as a football team, all the adversity they've overcome."

WATCHING THE SHOW: Mitt Romney, trying to connect

Graphic shows APGfK poll results on presidential candidate favorability

(AP) ? If the presidential election were held today, Romney and Obama would be more or less tied, the latest polls show. But on one voter test, Obama has a clear advantage:

Whom would you rather have a beer with?

Or, if you don't drink (as Romney doesn't), whom would you rather have a cup of coffee with? Or take with you on a road trip (with or without your dog)? Or invite over for dinner?

Simply put, there is a likability gap.

This may seem trivial compared to questions like, say, which candidate you think will better revive the economy or safeguard the nation's nuclear weapons. But election after election has demonstrated that how voters feel about their candidate matters. A lot. It buoyed Ronald Reagan and helped sink John Kerry.

Likability has become a political buzzword that stands for something deeper. More like affinity. Empathy. How well does he or she connect? How much does he understand people like me?

There are Republicans who think this will be the deciding issue for Mitt Romney. He has about as good a playing field as a challenger could hope for, yet has not broken past the president. The election, they believe, may well turn on whether Romney can use this week's convention and the fall debates to really connect with voters in a way he has not yet been able to.

Democrats see this as Obama's core asset. Even in these hard times, voters feel he gets their plight better than the rich guy does. Asked which candidate better understands the problems of people like you, Obama beats Romney among registered voters 51 to 36 percent in the latest AP/GfK poll. Some 53 percent of adults hold a "favorable" opinion of the president, compared with just 44 percent who view Romney favorably.

And that is a president who isn't actually all that touchy-feely himself, having at times been compared to the "Star Trek" alien Mr. Spock, who suppressed emotion in order to solve problems. In fact, Obama's personal ratings are lower than most presidential candidates in recent elections, notes polltaker Andrew Kohut. They are just better than Romney's.

That is Romney's challenge.

___

CAN HE persuade voters to feel comfortable enough with him to turn out Obama? Not just to agree with him on issues but to trust him with their futures? That is why likability is about a lot more than having a beer.

It is about addressing what The Economist, a business-oriented British newsmagazine, editorialized as their "main doubt" about Romney: "Nobody knows who this strange man really is."

One striking element of this long campaign is how little Romney did over years of campaigning to really introduce himself, apparently not wanting to distract from discussion of the weak economy.

But Romney and his campaign were on course to use this convention to "warm up" his image. The candidate and his wife, Ann, sat down with Fox News at their home in New Hampshire the other day.

The correspondent, Chris Wallace, shared their pancakes as Ann described how Mitt had ironed his own shirt just that morning. "I noticed he was doing the laundry last night," she disclosed.

For his part, Romney did what he could to address the issue: "Remember that Popeye line, 'I am what I am and that's all what I am.'" What voters really want, he says, is effective management of the economy and for that he is your man.

In another interview, published by Politico on Monday, Romney acknowledged his likability problem but blamed it on the waves of attack ads Obama and his allies have launched against him (although his personal ratings were low even before the barrage).

He tried to turn the issue around on Obama, calling him a nice guy but a failed president.

In other words, American public, you liked Obama as a candidate but are disappointed in him as a president, while I, Romney, may be disappointing as your candidate but will deliver as your president.

Jon Stewart scoffed when George W. Bush (at that point a teetotaler) was described as a guy you'd love to have a beer with. I don't want a president I can have a beer with, Stewart said, "I want my president to be the designated driver." Given the highway pileup the American economy has just been through, Stewart's quip isn't all that far from Romney's campaign argument.

But can likability or affinity be separated from issues and effectiveness? That is becoming one of the principal questions of this campaign.

The question is sometimes posed as if managing the economy, on which Romney scores better, is different from the personal qualities that Obama scores better on. Some Republicans argue that Obama's personal ratings are all that keep him afloat amid the economic wreckage.

But that misses the point, says one Democratic consultant. Those personal qualities may actually be a way some voters connect politics to their economic facts of life.

"If you are part of the working class and you believe that the deck has been stacked against people like you for a decade or so," this consultant said, "who is likely to be the more 'desirable' remedy for that ? the financial CEO who 'understands' the economy or the guy you think is fighting for people like you?"

Which is why fighting for you is an Obama campaign mantra.

___

IN TRYING to overcome this, Romney is banging into a pretty deep vein of American political feeling. Ever since Andrew Jackson let his supporters traipse mud through the White House, there has been a resistance to letting the patricians back in power.

It took a huge economic crisis for Americans to elect the Hudson valley gentryman, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Herbert Hoover in fact was a good man, just a failed president, which is exactly what Romney is trying to say about Obama.

Romney's team has been planning to use the convention to highlight Obama's failure, as they see it, without denying the president's likability ? and their own candidate's competence, as they see it, while acknowledging the need to humanize him.

This highlights the risk they have taken by waiting until so late in the campaign to try to personalize the candidate. Because Hurricane Isaac has intervened, in more ways than one.

On the obvious level, it has disrupted and overshadowed the convention so far. It has created a conversation about the last Republican administration's handling of a natural disaster when Romney would like to talk about the present Democratic administration's handling of the economy.

But as if to confirm that he is what he is (to channel Popeye again), the hurricane has created the kind of test for Romney that campaigns so often throw at candidates, a sudden change of terrain when the campaign was in the middle of doing something else.

These moments can be opportunities. What better chance to project empathy and connection than a looming threat to life and property? And Romney, Ann at his side, seemed to start out that way. The couple's thoughts, he said, were with the people in the storm's path, and he expressed hope that "they're spared any major destruction."

A more empathic politician might have left it at that, as his running mate, Paul Ryan, did. But Romney kept going, effusive about the convention and how it would go on despite the storm.

"I like my speech. I really like Ann's speech," he said. "Our sons are already in Tampa, and they say it's terrific there ? a lot of great friends. And we're looking forward to a great convention."

Which, if his ear for connecting with people is as tin as it seems to be there, might be somewhat less likely than he hopes.

Frank Luntz: Mitt Romney At Republican National Convention Has To Show He Can Fix It

TAMPA, Fla. -- Frank Luntz called. The Republican political strategist wanted to talk about a focus group that he conducted Sunday afternoon, which was observed from behind a smoked one-way window by myself and a room full of other reporters.

Luntz really wanted to make sure we mention that it was sponsored by the for-profit University of Phoenix.

I asked what he saw, if anything, that was new in the two-plus hours he talked to the 23 men and women in his group. But he's a little distracted as he drives down the road on his way to the next thing.

"We're driving to the Georgia delegation, and the guy behind me is doing navigation, and I feel like I'm 16 again learning how to drive," Luntz said.

"I was pretty bad. The worst of all was when I learned how to drive a stick in Austria and Salzburg, which is basically built into a mountain. My mom tried to jump out of a car because it was sliding backwards, and I can't figure out how to do the brake and the clutch. But she doesn't understand that if she jumps out of the car, the door will knock her over because it's going backward. So she is repeatedly jumping out of the car and repeatedly getting knocked over in her effort to disappear. It was a great experience. It was really bonding between me and my family."

I laughed, and reminded him of where he left off, which was talking about how Mitt Romney's business record is an asset and a liability, and how voters "recognize that he's a businessman but that cuts both ways."

He continued making that point.

"It cuts both ways. Nobody thinks that a CEO is compassionate. Nobdy thinks that a CEO cares. That's the negative. The positive is they believe CEO's are problem solvers, and that's Mitt Romney's greatest strength. He's a problem solver. And that's his answer," Luntz said.

He doesn't pause a beat before saying, "The guy is urinating on the side of the road. He's smoking a pipe and urinating. I love Florida."

Ok, so what does Romney need to do in his speech Thursday?

"He has to show it that he's a problem-solver. People have to feel that he is the guy to fix it. They're disappointed -- that's the word that everyeone uses: 'I'm disappointed with Barack Obama. He did not deliver.' But Romney has to show that it's not smoke and mirrors. And they're going to give him a chance.

"The time to do it is running short. And I'll tell you something. I do think he waited a bit too long," Luntz said.

Luntz is doing another focus group in Charlotte, N.C. After this phone conversation, I'm definitely going to that.

Exclusive: Ex-Penn State pres. reveals his own abusive past

Graham Spanier, the former Penn State University president who stepped down in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, told ABC News today that he was a victim of child abuse so severe that he required several surgeries to correct the damage.

His history as a victim, he said, was a deeply personal rejoinder to those critics who accuse him of trying to cover up Sandusky's crimes and not caring about the children.

"I've never met anyone who has had a higher level of awareness [about child abuse,]" Spanier said in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Josh Elliott.

Spanier, 64, is on a campaign to resurrect his once pristine reputation. Though not charged with a crime, the findings of an independent investigation accuse him of failing to prevent a "child sexual predator harming children for over a decade."

The abuse he sustained at the hands of his father, a working class immigrant, began when he was a child and continued through his adolescence. Spanier said he has had four surgeries in his adulthood to correct problems with his breathing, face and head as a result of the injuries.

"It resulted in, of course, some emotional scarring, but also some substantial physical damage," he said of the abuse.

Before his tenure as a university administrator, Spanier was a professor specializing in the study of dysfunctional families and child abuse, an interest he said resulted directly from his childhood.

FOR AN EXCLUSIVE ABC NEWS INTERVIEW WITH GRAHAM SPANIER, TUNE IN TO "NIGHTLINE" TONIGHT AT 11:35 P.M. EDT.

Spanier objects to the findings of the Freeh Report calling it "wrong in its conclusions" and denying the accusation that he "conspired to conceal a known child predator."

Spanier insists when an assistant football coach reported seeing Sandusky acting suspiciously with a boy in the team showers in 2001, he was only made aware that Sandusky had engaged in "horseplay" with a child.

An independent investigation ordered by the unviersity, the so-called Freeh Report, and others have questioned why Spanier did not further investigate Sandusky after learning even that information.

"Never in my time as president of Penn State did I ever receive a report or even a hint that Jerry Sandusky was engaged in child abuse, a sexual act, criminal activity or anything resembling that with any child. Had I known that, or even suspected it, I would have forcefully intervened. But I never heard a report like that," he said.

Spanier said he had only met Sandusky once and was only marginally involved when in 1998 and again in 2001 reports were made that Sandusky was seen engaged in inappropriate behavior with a child.

"I do not get involved in police matters. I always had a very hands-off attitude and issues pertaining to people were dealt with by the police, by human resources, or by supervisors in various areas of the university," he said of the 1998 incident. He also noted that police, the state Department of Public Welfare and prosecutors all determined that Sandusky had not molested a child at that time.

In 2001, however, Spanier was copied on an email about another Sandusky incident, witnessed by assistant coach Mike McQueary who heard sexual noises and saw an underage boy in the shower.

In emails two administrators, Athletic Director Tim Curley and now retired Vice President Gary Schultz, proposed not alerting the authorities but instead letting Sandusky off with a warning and the promise that he would get "professional help."

Spanier agreed to that plan. However, he noted in an email that by not bringing the accusations to police they would be "vulnerable for not having reported it."

Penn State's Ex-President Fights for His Reputation

That phrase has dogged Spanier and was crucial in the Freeh's reports assessment of what he knew and how he failed to act.

"'Vulnerable' was not best choice of a term," Spanier told ABC News, adding that "it was a reaction to the possibility that we didn't want this to happen."

Spanier said he had "no recollection of being concerned" that the school might be held legally liable.

Spanier recalled the anger with the university when the grand jury indicted Sandusky, leading ultimately to Spanier's demotion to professor and the firing of legendary football coach Joe Paterno.

"I opposed the firing [of Paterno]... There could be riots, it could be a rush to judgment, they knew it was his last season" and Paterno should have been allowed to finish the season, he said.

Spanier said he and Paterno had secretly signed agreement that the coach would retire at the end of 2012.

In July, Sandusky was convicted on 45 counts of abuse against 10 boys. Curley and Schultz are awaiting trial on charges of perjury and failing to report child abuse.

Menopause evolved to prevent competition between in-laws

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

The menopause evolved, in part, to prevent competition between a mother and her new daughter-in-law, according to research published in the journal Ecology Letters.

The study ? by researchers from the University of Turku (Finland), University of Exeter (UK), University of Sheffield (UK) and Stanford University (US) ? explains for the first time why the relationship women had with their daughter-in-laws could have played a key role.

The data showed that a grandmother having a baby later in life, and at the same time as her daughter-in-law, resulted in the newborns of each being 50 per cent less likely to survive to adulthood.

The analysis helps to solve one of nature's great mysteries: why female humans, unlike most other animals, stop reproducing so early in life.

It also adds weight to the theory that the menopause evolved to allow women to focus on their grandchildren. Traditionally, this role included providing food for the family and protecting young children from accidents and disease.

The topic has rarely been analysed, because it requires detailed data on the reproductive success of several generations of women, with knowledge on who lived with whom and when. Scientists analysed 200-years' worth of data collected by Dr Virpi Lummaa of the University of Sheffield and her student Mirkka Lahdenper? of Turku University, Finland, from church registers of pre-industrial Finland. They looked at information on birth and death rates from 1700 to 1900, before the advent of modern contraception or healthcare.

The study reveals that women had more grandchildren if they stopped reproducing around the age of 50. The research team believes this was partly because of reduced competition between the older woman and her daughter-in-law and partly because of the support she could offer her grandchildren.

A child born to families with a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law reproducing simultaneously was twice as likely to die before reaching the age of 15. However, this was not the case in the instances when a mother and daughter had babies at the same time. This suggests that related women breed cooperatively and unrelated women breed conflictually.

There is a clear biological benefit to a woman cooperating with her daughter: the women share 50 per cent of the same genes so being in competition for food and other resources makes little sense. This is not the case for a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law: they are not related, so it is logical they should compete to maximise on their chances of spreading their genes.

Consequently, the Finnish data shows that the average woman would benefit from stopping reproducing at the age of 51 if she risked breeding with her daughter-in-law, but not her daughter.

Different theories have been put forward for the evolution of the menopause in humans, including the idea that it evolved to protect older women against the danger of dying during pregnancy or childbirth. However, under two per cent of the pre-industrial Finns in this study died in childbirth in their mid-40s, and such risks of dying in childbirth are similarly low in hunter-gatherers today.

Co-author Dr Andy Russell from the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology and Conservation said: "We are so used to the fact that all women will experience menopause, that we forget it is seriously bizarre. Evolutionary theory expects animals to reproduce throughout their lifespan, and this is exactly what happens in almost every animal known, including human men. So why are women so different? Our study shows for the first time that the answer could lie in the relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law."

Dr Virpi Lummaa, from the University of Sheffield's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, said: "The research adds weight to the argument that menopause evolved because of the vital role that grandmothers played in rearing grandchildren in traditional societies. Although family roles have changed, many grandmothers still play a vital role in caring for their grandchildren and in western society a large number provide daycare. It is interesting that even today, mothers rarely choose to have children at the same time as their offspring: even if they have not yet been through the menopause."

The reality of Android

While the trial between Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (005930) now wrapping up in San Jose, California has gotten the most attention over the past few weeks, it?s hardly the only legal battle these two behemoths are fighting. In another scuffle taking place with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, Samsung is defending its Galaxy Nexus smartphone against allegations that it copies Apple?s Siri voice assistant feature. There are plenty of interesting points and counterpoints emerging as the two companies exchange blows, but one in particular helps reinforce the stark contrast between perceptions of Google?s (GOOG) mobile OS on the Internet, and the reality of Android.

To read about Android devices on many blogs, in the comments sections of news sites and on social networks and forums, a recurring pain point users describe with regard to various phones from Samsung, HTC (2498), Motorola and other vendors is the presence of ?skins.? Users want stock Android, or so it would appear, and these additional UI and service layers created by vendors do little beyond hogging resources and slowing phones down.

As loud and widespread as these complaints are, however, the group making them is a clear minority.

Apple?s legal team recently argued that the Galaxy Nexus is a hugely important device, and Samsung stole iPhone features in an effort to help bolster sales.??This was the beat-Apple strategy,? Apple?s lawyer recently argued, according to Bloomberg. ?This was the top of the line, Cadillac phone they trotted out to compete with the iPhone.?

In its defense against Apple?s claims, Samsung pointed out a simple truth: the Galaxy Nexus is hardly a device that might help the company ?beat Apple.? In fact, in the grand scheme of things, the flagship ?pure Google? phone is pretty insignificant.

?This is a product that, at most, captured 0.5 percent of the market,? one of Samsung?s lawyers told the court. ?Nothing in the record here would support a finding of irreparable harm [to Apple].?

Samsung?s lawyer also pointed out that while Apple?s iPhone sales totaled?$16.2 billion in the June quarter alone, Galaxy Nexus sales amounted to just?$250 million during its first two quarters of availability.

Meanwhile, Samsung has sold more than 10 million Galaxy Note smartphones since its launch, and more than 10 million Galaxy S III handsets in less than two months. Both of these popular smartphones feature Samsung?s TouchWiz user interface layer.

Android is the most popular smartphone operating system on the planet, and as Samsung?s arguments in court help convey, ?pure Google??has precious little to do with the platform?s tremendous success.

Crucial Dos and Don'ts for Picking a Professional Roofer

Picture living in a spot where the roof covering of your residence is finally giving away, in Omaha, Nebraska. It is either allowing even more light than your home windows are, or is leaking as it rains. You need help getting your roof covering repaired, and you need it without delay.

Certainly, this circumstance demands the assistance of a qualified and relied upon professional roofer. Only catch is there's a lot of professional roofer and companies in Omaha, Nebraska's leading city. Even though Forbes considers Omaha as a city that can easily offer people more than just what they spend, there's bound to be some people who do not exactly deliver on that premise. However to guarantee you do get your money's worth and a great roofing contractor too, here are some and don'ts and do's you ought to follow:

Don'ts

Should you get some contractor bids, don't instantly take the cheapest one due to the fact that the services might not be up to par. You may also encounter one who asks for a very large deposit or a full payment even before the project is finished. Don't employ a specialist who does either one to be sure he finishes the work on time.

When you ask a contractor questions you have in mind, do not agree to less than satisfactory answers. And even if the contractor does provide reasonable responses, do not take them at face value until you can check them out. While it might be easier to opt for a big-name contractor, do not assume bigger is better unless you do your due thoroughness.

Do's

Do talk to family, good friends, and next-door neighbors if they know Omaha roofing companies and if they have actually tried them. Do attempt to select local ones because they can address your requirements more quickly and they are knowledgeable with the weather conditions in your area. Presuming you get some nearby referrals, do verify their credentials by keeping in mind the acronym LIB: license, insurance, background. Ask for information of their LIB that you can easily confirm with the local government and insurance agency.

More significance, do ask as many detailed and appropriate questions from the roofing companies in Omaha NE you plan to choose. Better yet, do have them examine your roof covering and discuss with them your worries then and there to assess their expertise on roofing. And do go with your instinct if you felt comfy and completely satisfied during your discussion.

There are some other dos and don'ts you can think about in your search for great roofing contractors Omaha NE has around. If you're familiar with exactly what to do and exactly what not to do, you reduce your selections and better your opportunities of finding the right one. Check out more about professional roofer from TrustyGuides.com and HowStuffWorks.com.

For more details, search Omaha roofing companies, roofing companies in Omaha NE, and roofing contractors Omaha NE in Google for related information.

Modern, Intelligent Office Design Can Improve Morale And Increase ...

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

Belfast, UK August 7th 2012 ? There are many ways in which the modern business can attempt to improve their results including the release of new products and the employment of new staff. One way that some organisations overlook is through the offering of a top quality and intelligently designed office. Office design can play a major part in the success, or otherwise, of the modern business and it can improve communication, increase productivity, and generate greater morale with employees.

?

Communication and collaboration are key to the success of most businesses. While your employees and teams within an organisation need to be able to work independently of one another they also need to be able to come together as a single and cohesive unit. This is made possible with intelligent office design. Placing connected teams together and avoiding the placement of potentially loud and noisy teams next to those that need silence is only a beginning of this design process.

?

Productivity and morale can also be increased by providing employees with somewhere comfortable and modern to work. The modern office includes everything that employees need when they are working up to 40 hours a week from a single location. As well as the essentials, like desks, chairs, and office storage, the forward thinking business will also provide for their employees by offering canteen or kitchen facilities, somewhere comfortable to relax when not working, and other beneficial features.

?

OfficeInteriorSolutions.com is a leading office design company providing a range of beneficial services including office fit outs, refurbishment, and office planning and design. They also have a large catalogue of ergonomic, designer office furniture that can be used to further enhance the effectiveness of the office and the productivity of those within.
