Disney Research's Touch? system detects your touch on most things, even water (video)

Disney Research has announced some new touch interface technology that add extra gesture functionality to existing touchscreens and more exotic items like doorknobs and even the water's surface. Touché works by sensing capacitive signals across a range of frequencies -- whereas typical systems only pick up signal at a single frequency. This Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing (SFCS) can recognize exactly how we interact with an object or surface, not limited to surface area differences. According to Disney Research, this could include embedding different commands for when a user pinches or grasps a hooked-up object. One proof of concept door knob allows it to be locked or display a "be right back" sign depending on exactly how it's handled. Get the full explanation -- and see some watery fingertip detection -- right after the break.

Russell Brand OWNS "Katy Perry" Heckler During Stand-Up Show

Russell Brand absolutely shut it down during his stand-up show in Atlantic City, N.J., just annihilating a heckler who had been taunting him about Katy Perry.

The heckler had been yelling Perry-related comments at the Borgata on Saturday, most of which went ignored by Russell, who split with Katy last winter.

But it was his yelling "God save the queen!" during a bit about the British royal family that sent the zany comic into full-scale verbal attack mode:

"What, mate?" Russell tentatively began. "I want to see what this person looks like, turn the lights on for me because I really want to achieve some sort of confirmation. Let's have a look... Come here, let's see you."

The audience was all too happy to direct Brand.

"Let's see how your mental illness looks in the daylight," Russell said, ushering the man forward. "It's you, is it? Oh, dear. I was hoping that your personality was just a result of physical beauty. But then I saw you."

"I thought, 'This guy's confident, probably, because he's incredibly handsome,' but look at you. You look like somebody who's fallen off the outside of a church."

"And what is it that you have rattling around your mind, some bizarre combination of alcohol and idiocy... some cocktail of nothing.

"And yet the confidence to continue shouting. They say of course, don't they, that empty vessels make the most noise. What an enormous echo of nothingness from you."

"I know on some level, despite your physical appearance to an ape, that you're a human being," he continued. "I think silence is your friend."

"I think keep your lips firmly, firmly clamped together."

"Because everything that comes out of your mouth, from your idiotic announcements to your disgusting halitosis that's coming through this room, is an abomination."

In a word ... owned.

LONDON (AP) ? If the phone hacking scandal gripping Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. empire has a familiar ring, it might be because you've heard the story before. Scrappy outsider turns modest newspaper business into international media conglomerate. Ambition turns to hubris. Mogul dramatically falls from grace.

From William Randolph Hearst to Rupert Murdoch, many media barons' stories follow a familiar arc.

"He's one of a series," said James Curran, a professor of communications at Goldsmiths University in London. "He seems to me to be in the same press baron tradition."

Before Murdoch came Robert Maxwell and Conrad Black, both of whose careers at the top of the British media establishment ended in disgrace. Before those two came Lord Beaverbrook, the Daily Express owner whose excesses were lampooned by Evelyn Waugh in his 1938 novel "Scoop."

Earlier still was the New York Journal's William Randolph Hearst, who has become linked to the swashbuckling maverick at the center of Orson Wells' 1941 classic "Citizen Kane."

There are huge differences: Unlike Black and Maxwell, Hearst, Murdoch, and Beaverbrook stayed successful. The Hearst Corp. is 125 years old; News Corp. is worth $60 billion; there's still a statue to Beaverbrook in his Canadian hometown of Fredericton.

But there are important parallels, too.

Britain's media tycoons came from abroad ? Australia, Canada, or Eastern Europe ? and rapidly became establishment figures, winning wealth, titles, and friends in high places.

Then, eventually, came the fall.

Beaverbrook's attempt to create his own political party was knocked back in the 1930s, and he found himself cast adrift following the defeat of close ally Winston Churchill in 1945.

Black's and Maxwell's careers were blighted by criminality. Maxwell, having raided his newspaper's pension fund, drowned under murky circumstances in 1991; Black was only released Friday from a U.S. prison following a 2007 conviction for cheating his shareholders.

Once one of the most powerful forces in British politics, courted by Labour and Conservative leaders alike, Murdoch also has seen his clout wither amid the scandal over illegal eavesdropping at his News of the World tabloid.

Revelations of widespread illegality there have led to the arrests of dozens of journalists and media executives, the resignations of high-flying political operatives and police leaders, and hundreds of millions of dollars in legal costs.

The narrative of the hacking scandal may echo earlier stories of overreach, but Murdoch's story has little to do with those of Black or Maxwell, said Tom Bower, who has written biographies of the latter.

"There is a sharp difference," said Bower, explaining that Murdoch built "a huge and successful business" based on hard work and sharp elbows, while his competitors failed because they had created "flimsy businesses based on fraud."

Murdoch's story bears a stronger resemblance to Beaverbrook, a turn-of-the-century entrepreneur who would help revolutionize London's Fleet Street newspapers, according to Jacques Poitras, the author of "Beaverbrook: A Shattered Legacy."

Born William Aitken in the small maritime province of New Brunswick, Beaverbrook had a modest start selling insurance and magazines door to door before moving on to bond promotion and striking it rich.

He moved to England, where he was knighted, invested in the populist Daily Express, and ? with the help of innovations such as crossword puzzles, gossip columns and society pages ? turned it into the biggest-selling paper in the English-speaking world. That title was later claimed by Murdoch's News of the World.

"Both men published fabulously successful newspapers, and they were good at it," Poitras said. "They knew what people wanted (and) they delivered it."

Beaverbrook became fantastically influential, serving as a powerful Cabinet minister and Churchill adviser.

"His power in the 30s and 40s in London was unmatched," said Poitras. "I don't know if you could have someone of that clout now. ... Murdoch is the only one who seems to have made waves in the same way."

Compared to Beaverbrook and Murdoch, Maxwell and Black are a "second division of press baron," said Curran, the professor of communications.

Black, a member of the Canadian elite, eventually came to own The Daily Telegraph, the Jerusalem Post, and a string of U.S. and Canadian newspapers before his embezzlement plunged his empire into crisis.

Maxwell's rags-to-riches-to-ruin story is in some respects more compelling.

Born into an Orthodox Jewish family in the destitute Carpathian mountain region of what was then known as Czechoslovakia, Maxwell narrowly escaped a Nazi concentration camp to move to London. He set up a successful publishing company and moved into politics, throwing his support behind the left-wing Labour Party.

As early as 1969, there were signs of trouble. Britain's trade department investigated Maxwell in the wake of a botched takeover deal, branding him unfit "to exercise proper stewardship of a publicly quoted company" ? nearly the same language used by Labour lawmakers to condemn Murdoch in a critical report on phone hacking published last week.

Maxwell survived the trade investigation, spending the next two decades expanding his empire and racking up an enormous pile of debt. By the time his body was recovered from the waters off the Canary Islands ? no one knows precisely how he died ? his company was more than 2 billion pounds in the red.

Murdoch, who outmaneuvered Maxwell and Black to stay at the top of the British newspaper scene, has so far avoided falling into the same abyss that swallowed his competitors. Even his most strident critics don't accuse him of anything worse than "willful blindness." He remains at the head of a fabulously successful media company, responsible for record-smashing films like "Avatar" or TV hits such as "The Simpsons," and News Corp.'s share price is riding high.

His influence in Britain, however, has undeniably suffered. Politicians who once scrambled to kiss his hand are now lining up to boast about how independent they were. Prime Minister David Cameron, who in 2008 flew out to the tycoon's yacht to seek his blessing, acknowledged last week that "we all did too much cozying up to Rupert Murdoch."

In that respect, Murdoch's isolation ? in Britain at least ? seems redolent of the last scene of Citizen Kane: Successful, wealthy, but unloved.

Samsung reveals new flagship Galaxy smartphone

(AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co.'s latest Galaxy phone will have a high-definition touch screen that's nearly twice the size of the iPhone, while being thinner and lighter than Apple's phone.

The Galaxy line has emerged as the biggest competitor to the iPhone. Samsung said the Galaxy S III will go on sale in Europe on May 29 and in the U.S. this summer. The Korean company showed off the phone Thursday at an event in London.

Like previous Galaxy phones, the S III will run Google Inc.'s Android software. The processor, or "brains" of the device, will be upgraded to include four computing cores. The iPhone and most other high-end phones are "dual-core," but there are some quad-core devices on sale already.

The added computing power will be put to use in the S III's expanded voice-command features. When the phone screen is off, owners will be able to "wake" it up by saying "Hi, Galaxy." They can then give further spoken commands. When Apple launched the iPhone 4S last year, it also made advances in voice recognition a central selling point.

Samsung will sell a pad that charges a phone placed on it, with no need to connect a cable. Palm Inc.'s last smartphone had a similar feature when released three years ago, but it never became popular.

Samsung said the phone will go on sale in 145 countries with 296 phone companies, making it the company's biggest launch so far.

In the U.S., Japan and Korea, the phone will use fourth-generation, or 4G, networks for faster data downloads. Samsung didn't say which carriers would sell it, but the previous Galaxy model was sold by all four national U.S. wireless carriers: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Samsung doesn't release phone shipment figures, but most analysts believe its smartphones outsold Apple and its 35.1 million iPhones in the January-to-March period. Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley believes Apple and Samsung together accounted for virtually all the profits in the phone industry in the first three months of 2012, with three-quarters going to Apple by virtue of its singular focus on the high-priced iPhone.

Samsung and Apple have a complicated relationship. They're rivals in the smartphone and tablet-computer markets and fight each other in court over patents. But Samsung is one of Apple's largest suppliers of chips and displays, and Apple is one of Samsung's largest clients.

The Galaxy series debuted in 2010. The screen size has increased with each version: The Galaxy S had a screen that measured 4 inches diagonally. It was followed by the S II, at 4.3 inches.

The S III screen has a 4.8-inch screen. Meanwhile, the iPhone screen has stayed the same size, at 3.5 inches, but the recent models pack more pixels into the screen, for a sharper display.

Rick Ross Tells 'A Very Dark Story' On God Forgives, I Don't

'It's extremely lyrical. The music is next level,' Ross says of his record, out July 31.
By Rahman Dukes

Rick Ross predicts his upcoming album God Forgives, I Don't will take fans on a thrilling journey riddled with bone-chilling rap tales never experienced on his previous efforts.

"This is my best project yet," Ross declared, draped in all black and sparkling diamonds while sitting at his MMG press conference, reminiscent of a boss giving orders before his capos. "God Forgives, I Don't is a very dark story."

After a number of setbacks, Ross stamped a July 31 release date on the album he's touting as hip-hop's "most anticipated album of the year."

"It's extremely lyrical. The music is next level," Ross said. "I'm expecting nothing but the biggest results. The collaborations is gonna surprise a few of you guys."

"Surprising" is one way to describe these past months for MTV's Hottest MC in the Game. Rozay triumphantly rose to the occasion earlier this year when he released the highly successful Rich Forever mixtape just a month after he was stricken with multiple seizures. Now, with all signs pointing toward GFID, Ross is looking to deliver on the hype of the album.

"I think the stories being told on this record is going to make it stand apart from all the other albums I've ever done," says Ross. "By the time you get to track two, you gonna understand this is a completely different body of work."

The rapper/entrepreneur's stock has ballooned with every major album release, and God Forgives, I Don't should fair no different, possibly even catapulting him into the upper echelon of galactic hip-hop MCs like Jay-Z and Nas.

"This was the missing part of my legacy," Ross stated. "This is what's going to put me over the top right there."

Angelina Hates The Ring!

ang1_wide.jpg
It?s only been a few weeks since Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt announced their engagement. But as she met with the foreign minister of Ecuador on April 22, the ring finger on her left hand was noticeably bare. While some claim she thought the $500,000 sparkler wasn?t appropriate for a serious meeting, everyone knows that engagement rings are meant to be worn always. So why did Angelina really ditch the ring that Brad, 48, helped design himself? ?She isn?t fond of it,? a friend confides to In Touch. ?Nothing against Brad?s design. She?s just never been enamored of white diamonds.?

Indeed, the friend says picky Angelina, 36, had been hoping for a less traditional stone. ?Emeralds are her favorite.? And she?s been complaining that Brad?s choice of the 10-carat diamond, rather than an emerald, ?shows how little he knows her.? Of course, her hissy fit over the ring shows a lot about her, as well. ?She?s so demanding,? an insider says. ?She?s acting like a bridezilla.?
