Student Debt: Crippling for All Ages and Not Going Away Soon

It?s a looming tornado; a trillion-dollar problem that -- because of its staggering statistics and massive economic effect -- has gotten heavy media attention and been discussed extensively by Congress. But while many think of student debt as a?young-person's problem, with more than 20 million Americans over 30 years old paying off college loans, it is anything but.

?This is not just a problem for the so-called ?traditional students,?? says lawyer and student loan expert Heather Jarvis. ?The majority of people currently making payments on student loans are in their 30s and older.?

Jarvis is right. According to research conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, while the under-30 age group has the most borrowers at 14 million (owing a total of $292 billion) -- borrowers age 30-39 owe the most, with a crippling $307 billion in debt.

The 40-49 age group follows, owing $154 billion; the 50-59 age bracket is at $106 billion; and the over-60 category currently carries around $43 billion -- for a total outstanding debt of $902 billion.

?The problem of student debt is not just ?economic? in the narrow sense,? says Alan Cafruny, a professor and author at Hamilton College. ?Debt has all kinds of consequences for society: it imposes social discipline, circumscribing young people?s options, making them more acquiescent and conformist in all sorts of subtle and not so subtle ways.?

Twenty-six-year-old Scott Meyers has made huge life decisions based on debt.

Myers and his wife, Anne Rose, owed around $130,000 in student debt after graduating from Colorado Christian University in 2009. Meyers, whose sports scholarship paid for half his tuition, quickly began paying down the debt (he now owes $60,000), but it has not been easy.

?My wife and I decided to be very strict with things,? says Myers. ?We both have the same cars we had when we were 16 years old. We also rent since all our money goes to loans -- and we are holding off on having a family because we don?t want to be hindered and we don?t want our kid to be hindered.?

?Debt has all kinds of consequences for society: it imposes social discipline, circumscribing young people?s options, making them more acquiescent and conformist in all sorts of subtle and not so subtle ways.?

- Professor Alan Cafruny

Myers says he assumes full responsibility for taking out those loans and is not complaining about that. He pays every month and has now consolidated his loans, though he says he has had issues: student lender Sallie Mae would not apply his payments to the loans with the highest interest rate, which were at a staggering 10.5%. (He called his congressman and the issue was resolved.) Yet, while Myers recognizes that he is part of what he calls a ?sickening? situation, he does point out that at 18 years old, he was not aware of the repercussions.

?I?d never change anything,? says Myers, who met his wife in college. ?But I wish I had known early on when I was filling out those applications that were quick and easy that the $1,000 I was borrowing would end up costing me $4,000?. It hinders a lot of people to expand and grow and reach their potential.?

?People are very affected emotionally and socially by these loans,? says loan expert Jarvis. ?And while it?s easy to say they shouldn?t have taken them out if they can?t afford to pay, as a society, we don?t have great access to financial literacy and it?s not surprising at all that people don?t understand the problems.?

Mathew Holmes says he didn?t know what he was getting himself into when he began taking loans out at 17 to pay for his tuition at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island.

His parents split the cost with him, and he ended up owing $24,000 at the end of his four years. He was one of the lucky college graduates offered a job a few hours away in Boston, but the salary, which was just north of $39,000, was too low for him to cover his monthly loan balance (he tries to pay more than the minimum when he can) -- and pay rent in an expensive city. So, instead, he took a job close to his parents? home in East Hartford, Conn., where he lives to save money. He is also a graduate student at the University of Connecticut, but he has managed to attend without taking out more loans.

?I have friends who didn?t go to college who were able to buy houses during the downturn,? says Holmes, now 24. ?I would have liked to, but all my savings are going towards loans ? and the 6.8% interest that are on them.?

But Holmes finds it unsettling that as he struggles, Washington profits. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the federal student loan program will earn the government $184 billion in the next 11 years.

?That?s just not right to profit like that,? says Holmes.

Americans don?t realize how disastrous the situation can easily become, explained Lynnette Khalfani-Cox, a personal finance expert and author of the upcoming book College Secrets.

?A lot of people are just on autopilot, paying the minimum amount, which really means the maximum payments in the long run,? she says.

Right now, student-loan rates are 6.8% on newly-issued subsidized Stafford loans, a popular type of loan for students who demonstrate financial need (It doubled from 3.4% on July 1.) Unsubsidized Stafford loans have the same 6.8% rate, and Plus loan rates are at 7.9%.

Last week, the Senate passed legislation tying student-loan interest rates to current market rates -- a good thing for current students, who will pay a 3.86% interest rate for this coming school year because borrowing costs are unusually low. But, many argue, this is bad and expensive news for future students when rates go higher (though the legislation still needs to be approved by the House of Representatives).

?It really was a missed opportunity to get Americans to compete globally,? says Jarvis, who believes capping interest rates is a better alternative.

She says the pressure in the U.S. to achieve a high level of education -- tied to Americans? hope of gaining opportunity and success because of that degree -- weighs heavy on the consciousness of the nation. But the debt that is incurred because of it is, ironically, seen as irresponsible, and in some sense, shameful.

?Debters are seen as bad actors in some sense just by virtue of owing money,? said Jarvis ?And that shouldn?t be the case because people have the best intentions.?

According to the CBO, about $1.4 trillion in new direct loans will be made to students between 2013 and 2023; student-loan debt is the only type of consumer debt that has continued to rise since the start of the financial crisis, increasing from $550 billion to nearly $1 trillion at the beginning on 2013.

Helping to inflate those numbers is the staggering rise in the cost of getting a degree.

Over the past decade, the rate of increase in college tuition has tripled. According to the nonprofit College Board, the average public college tuition is $20,000 a year and the average private school cost is $40,000, while the most selective colleges average around $56,000.

?My father has owned a diesel company in a small town in Colorado my whole life,? says Myers. ?He took risks to have his business? and to work hard, take those risks and to have that freedom is the American Dream. In today?s America, with all the debt, we don?t have that.?

'Duck Dynasty' patriarch Phil plans to leave show

TV

Duck Dynasty

Brian Doben / Parade

"Duck Dynasty" will return for a fourth season on August 14.

Hold onto your beards. It looks like there's about to be a shake-up in the "Duck Dynasty" world.

Phil Robertson, the Duck Commander creator and papa of the Robertson clan, recently told Parade that he (and his epic beard) plans to leave the show in the near future.

?Not long," Phil said of how much longer he intends to participate in the show. "But I think it?ll go on without me.?

Indeed it will. The A & E hit show -- which, according to Parade, is the No.1 nonfiction cable series, is set to premiere its fourth season on Aug. 14. The new episodes will feature Phil and his duck-hunting family in all sorts of new scenarios. We can also expect to meet Alan, Phil and Kay's clean-shaven son, who will return to the family business during season four after spending 20 years as a preacher.

During a recent speech at a California church, Alan said he chose to step in front of the cameras to help spread his religious message.

"Because of my association with the show, I'll get to minister to a lot more people," Alan told the congregation. "Any person that's an evangelist, that's what you want to do, so I had to give this up for something possibly bigger."

Alan's wife, Lisa, will also join the cast for season four.

Despite their newfound fame, Willie, who serves as CEO of the family business, says that the Robertsons are closer than ever.

?It?s probably the opposite of most reality shows," he said. "And nobody gets a big head because we?re doing it all together.?

'Breaking Bad' documentary will follow drama's end

(AP) ? "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan said he expects the series finale to be well-received but is guarding against wild optimism.

"I think most folks are going to dig the ending," he told a session of the Television Critics Association on Friday. "But you be the judge."

He and the drama's cast, including Bryan Cranston who stars as teacher-turned-drug lord Walter White, were mum about what's in store when the AMC drama concludes later this year. It returns for its final hurrah, the second half of its last season, on Sunday, Aug. 11.

But the actors were willing to joke about it.

"I think everybody will be satisfied with the ending where we hug it out," Cranston said.

"Bryan, don't mention the musical numbers," chimed in Betsy Brandt, who plays Marie Schrader.

At least one character, attorney Saul Goodman, may live on. Gilligan said he is "working toward" a sequel featuring Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk.

"I would love to do it, would do it in a second," said Odenkirk. "Because if Vince wrote it, it would be awesome."

Bereft fans of the drama also will be left with a comprehensive documentary that Gilligan said has long been in the works. The filmmaker, Stu Richardson, was hired by the studio, Sony, to shoot behind-the-scenes material that's been used in boxed sets, Gilligan said.

The documentary may be available exclusively as part of the show's complete Blu-ray and DVD sets, he said.

"I don't know the ins and outs, but I've seen the damn thing and it's really good," Gilligan added.

Asked about how the show's high profile on social media, he acknowledged the importance of audience and media support but said he generally avoids falling into the deep "rabbit hole" of online commentary.

He's found the best way forward in crafting the show is to run the writers' room like "a sequestered jury room," one in which they can develop stories and scripts in isolation and to their satisfaction.

Asked if he had kept a long-imagined ending in mind for "Breaking Bad," Gilligan said he couldn't recall exactly "what my original intention was." He recounted his pitch for the drama as, "We're going to take Mr. Chips and turns him into Scarface," film references to the teacher of "Mr. Chips" and the gangster of "Scarface."

"Having said that, it leaves an awful lot of room for changing up the plot. I couldn't see that far into the future" to the finale, he said.

"Breaking Bad," which debuted in 2008, is a four-time Emmy nominee for best drama series, including for this year's awards, and Cranston and co-star Aaron Paul have claimed multiple trophies.

McCarthy not concerned by Jennings' jabs at QB

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) ? Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy blames Greg Jennings' new wardrobe for the verbal jabs the receiver has been taking at Aaron Rodgers.

"You know, when you put on that purple, something happens to you," McCarthy said Thursday, drawing laughs.

Jennings became the latest big-name Packer to sign with Green Bay's archrival this offseason, going to the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent. Since then, the Packers' former No. 1 receiver has taken a series of thinly veiled shots at Rodgers. He's refused to call the quarterback by name, referring to him instead as "12" or "the guy they have now," and he dismissed Green Bay's offense as "cookie cutter."

But his strongest criticisms came in a story in Thursday's Star Tribune in which he questioned Rodgers' leadership and implied the quarterback had become bigger than the team.

"For me, I'm such a team person, I'm going to defer to my teammates," Jennings told the Star Tribune. "I'm going to defer to the team, to the team, to the team. And I think when you reach a point where you're not deferring any longer, it's no longer really about the team.

"Don't get me wrong, '12' is a great person," Jennings added. "But when you hear all positives, all positives, all positives all the time, it's hard for you to sit down when one of your teammates says, 'Man, come on, you've got to hold yourself accountable for this.' It's hard for someone to see that now because all they've heard is I'm doing it the right way, I'm perfect. In actuality, we all have flaws."

Rodgers hasn't addressed the comments by Jennings ? his first availability at training camp is Friday ? but McCarthy didn't seem too concerned with them. Rodgers takes his role with the team very seriously, McCarthy said, and he's "proud" of how his quarterback's leadership has grown.

"He obviously puts a lot of time and energy into it and it's really reflected in the little things that no one really sees," McCarthy said. "To me, that's really the definition of a true leader, the ability to stack the individual moments with individuals throughout not only the locker room but throughout the building ? particularly in the football operations department. I just think it's really an outstanding role of going about it.

"Now, everybody grows and hits some bumps and twists and turns along the way," McCarthy added. "But (Rodgers) is very committed, very in tune with what's in the best interests of the football team. I'm very proud of him, just the way that he has taken that responsibility, and feel that it will be greater than ever going into this season."

Royal baby: London cabbie drives into history after picking up Duchess of Cambridge's parents from hospital

Tracy Mitchell, from the Isle of Dogs, drove Kate?s mother and father Michael from the Lindo Wing in Paddington to Kensington Palace on Tuesday after they met their grandson, George Alexander Louis, whose name was announced last night.

Mrs Mitchell said that when Mrs Middleton spoke about being ?overwhelmed? by the experience at the end of the journey, she joked: ?Imagine what it was like for me as the taxi driver!? Mrs Middleton replied: ?I?m really sorry.?

The cabbie added: ?Then I laughed and said, ?No, no ? it was very exciting for me.? She laughed, too.?

Excitement: Carole and Michael Middleton Mrs Mitchell, 49, who has been driving her bright blue taxi since January last year, didn?t know who her fare would be when she was called to the hospital. She had been told her passenger?s name was Danielle ? but a press officer briefed her when she pulled up near the hospital doors.

Seeing she was shocked, he wished her luck when she drove off with her passengers a few minutes later.

?It was incredible ? I mean picking up the future king?s grandparents ? it doesn?t get much better than that,? said Mrs Mitchell.

?I have picked up celebrities before, Lily Allen a couple of days ago, Julian Clary, Peter Stringfellow and Russell Grant, but this was the best. I thought, I can?t believe this. I?m going to be part of history.?

The 15-minute journey felt like she was taking her driving test all over again, she said. ?I took them through Hyde Park where there are speed humps. I was conscious of not bumping them about and of slowing down. I was on my best behaviour.?

She congratulated the couple on their good news and did not receive a tip, but said Mr Middleton tried to pay the ?15 fare until she told him it had already been settled on account. They thanked her and she went off to her last job of the day.

William, Kate and George were driven from Kensington Palace yesterday to the Middleton family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, after the Queen met her new great-grandson.

They are also expected to travel to Balmoral soon to spend time with the Duke of Edinburgh, who is recuperating after exploratory surgery. He and the Queen leave for Scotland tomorrow for their summer holiday.

The latest addition to the royal family will become King George VII when he ascends the throne but he may have to wait more than 50 years. Until then he will be known formally as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

It is understood the Duke and Duchess decided on his names before the Queen ? whose father was King George VI ? arrived for her 30-minute visit, and then discussed it with her.

Feds sue Florida over care of children in nursing homes

Florida healthcare regulators have acted with ?deliberate indifference to the suffering? of frail and disabled children by offering parents no ?meaningful? choice but to warehouse their children in nursing homes along with elders, the U.S. Department of Justice says in a lawsuit against the state filed Monday morning.

The Justice Department?s civil rights division accused the state of violating the landmark 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act ? which forbids discrimination against people with special needs ? by funding and managing its community programs so poorly that hundreds of children have been forced to live ? and sometimes grow up ? in institutions for the elderly.

Two years ago, the Justice Department told state health administrators that Florida?s system of care for frail and disabled children was discriminatory, because it failed to offer parents meaningful opportunities to care for their medically fragile children outside large, segregated institutions. While the state made half-hearted reforms, the DOJ said, the discrimination persisted.

The Justice Department, the lawsuit says, ?has determined that compliance with the ADA cannot be secured by voluntary means? by the state. The DOJ is asking a federal judge to declare the state?s program for disabled children in violation of federal law and to force the state to cease warehousing children in institutions.

?Unnecessary institutionalization denies children the full opportunity to develop and maintain bond with family and friends; impairs their ability to interact with peers without disabilities; and prevents them from experiencing many of the social and recreational activities to contribute to child development,? the lawsuit states.

It adds: ?Many of the institutionalized children remain in facilities for very long periods of time, even when it is apparent that their medical conditions would permit return to the community with appropriate supports.?

The lawsuit, aimed primarily at the state?s Agency for Health Care Administration, the Department of Health and the Department of Children & Families, follows several months of in-depth reporting on the children?s plight by the Miami Herald.

The suit appears to be one of the final official acts of Thomas E. Perez, who headed the DOJ?s civil rights division until gaining Senate approval last week to be President Barack Obama?s labor secretary, an appointment that was held up for months.

To a large degree, the controversy is over money: Even as Florida health administrators have increased the payment for pediatric nursing-home beds by close to 30 percent ? the state will now pay about $550 per day for a child in a nursing home ? the state has relentlessly cut services for families struggling to care for a severely disabled child at home.

Reimbursement rates for service providers in the community have remained stagnant since 1987, the suit says, resulting ?in shortages of nursing services in certain parts of the state.?

And three years ago, lawmakers simply cut $6 million from a program that pays for private-duty nursing care for Floridians who wish to remain outside institutions.

One program that is designed to allow parents to care for disabled children at home or in community settings now has a wait list with about 22,000 names. As of last fall, the lawsuit says, more than half of the Floridians have been waiting for care for five years or longer. Additional dollars for the program set aside by lawmakers earlier this year will only help ?fewer than five percent? of those waiting.

Rain helps firefighters battle wildfire in Southern California

IDYLLWILD, Calif. ? Firefighters in Southern California aided by heavy rain in the mountains above Palm Springs were starting to turn the tide Sunday on a stubborn wildfire that has burned across more than 40 square miles, destroyed a handful of homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of people.

An inch and a half of rain was measured Sunday morning at the aerial tramway near Palm Springs, with more rainfall expected throughout the day. The moisture helped slow the fire's progress.

"With diminished fire activity, firefighters made great progress with line construction, particularly along the east side towards Palm Springs," said U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Miller.

With the blaze almost half contained, authorities were able to lift evacuation orders for several communities.

The fire was still far from extinguished, however.

The thunderstorm helping douse the flames could also bring lightning, wind and flooding, said Miller, all hazardous conditions for fire crews.

The mountain wildfire began last Monday and has burned across about 42 square miles. It has destroyed 23 structures, including seven homes.

The fire was less than two miles from Idyllwild on its western flank. It was a similar distance from Palm Springs below on the desert floor, where an enormous plume of smoke could be seen.

Authorities have said the fire was human-caused, but wouldn't say whether it was accidental or intentional. There have been no reports of injuries.

More than 2,600 firefighters were battling the blaze Sunday, using bulldozers, helicopters and other equipment.

HPV Implicated In One Third Of Throat Cancer Cases, But Vaccines May Help

Michael Douglas may have been onto something?when he said his throat cancer was caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) contracted through oral sex. Even though Douglas later retracted his statement, two new studies not only support this claim, but also show that the HPV vaccine could prevent throat cancer.

Follow us

HPV?is the most common sexually-transmitted infection (STI). It's passed on through genital contact, most often during vaginal and anal sex, but can also be transmitted through oral sex as well. While many HPV infections resolve without treatment within two years, a small percentage of infections can cause more severe health problems, including recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), a condition in which warts grow in the throat, and a head and neck cancer called oropharyngeal cancer, which develops in the back of the throat, at the base of the tongue, and on the tonsils.

HPV And Throat Cancer

For the first of the studies, researchers looked at the most common types of cancer-causing HPV strains, HPV-16 and HPV-18, and their link with oropharnygeal cancer. Researchers followed study participants who were initially tested for the antibody E6, which indicates the presence of HPV. All patients were free of the antibody, and therefore free of HPV. Antibody E6 destroys the protective properties of cells, allowing HPV's cancer-causing properties to take effect, the BBC reported.

More than 10 years later, 135 people developed throat cancer and 1,599 people were cancer free. The researchers found that 35 percent of those with throat cancer had E6 antibodies in their system, compared to less than one percent of those who didn't have cancer.

"These striking results provide some evidence that HPV-16 infection may be a significant cause of oropharyngeal cancer," said Dr. Ruth Travis, a Cancer Research UK scientist at Oxford University and co-author of the study.

Dr. Sarah Hiom, Cancer Research UK's director of health information added that "if the HPV vaccine can also protect against oral HPV infections and cancers, then it could have a broader potential protective effect, but we don't have enough research yet to tell us."

HPV and Oral Infections

Another study, published July 17 in the journal PLOS One, found evidence suggesting that the HPV vaccine does protect people from developing HPV-related oral infection, according to HealthDay News.

The study looked into the four-year effects of the HPV vaccine, Cervarix, on 5,840 women compared to a control group of 1,626 women didn't receive a vaccine. They found that the vaccine prevented 93 percent of throat infections. Among the women who received the vaccine, only one developed an oral HPV infection, compared to 15 of the women who were part of the control group.

"The study is really preliminary information," said Dr. Elizabeth Poynor, a gynecological oncologist and pelvic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City. "It will provide a basis to begin to study how the vaccine will help protect against throat cancer."

"It's going to take a while to study those who have been vaccinated to determine that they are protected against throat cancer. This is just the beginning," she added.

The study highlights the need to vaccinate young boys as well, which has been met with some resistance among parents, Poyner said. A recent study?showed that boys whose mothers received preventative care more often ? in the form of flu shots and pap smears ? were more likely to receive HPV vaccines as well.

Evans talks 'Cap', explains post on bomber cover

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Chris Evans doesn't post on Twitter often, but when the actor saw the recent Rolling Stone cover featuring Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, he sent out a short missive: "Bad move Rolling Stone."

Evans appeared Saturday at Comic-Con to promote his new film "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Asked about the tweet, he said he felt the magazine intentionally glamorized Tsarnaev. The 19-year-old is accused of setting off two bombs with his brother during the marathon in April. Three people died and more than 250 were injured in the attack.

"I just felt on that Rolling Stone cover he looked like Jim Morrison," Evans said. "He looked like a rock star. It glorified him.

"If you want to do a story, if you want to examine how a young kid can be turned, and if you want to examine innocence lost and all those things, it's fine. The problem is putting him on the cover in that picture in that light, it glorified him. There's no two ways about it. He looked great."

Rolling Stone should have used a different picture, Evans said. "Show his mug shot, show something else that kind of doesn't make it look so fantastic to do such a horrible thing."

Interestingly, the issues Rolling Stone raised about Tsarnaev's complicated background are similar to the issues Captain America deals with in the sequel.

The "Captain America" comic book character was created in 1941 during the run-up to the United States' involvement in World War II. It was a tale of Steve Rogers, a gangly Army reject who participates in the government's secret soldier program and transforms into the patriotic warrior.

The world he lived in was much simpler. Determining good and evil was an easy matter. In the first film about the Marvel character, 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger," Cap awakes after being frozen in Arctic ice for 70 years. The world he finds is very different than the one he left.

The sequel, due out next April, presents the red, white and blue hero with far more challenges to navigate.

"Now that he has the tools to fight the good fight, whose side is he fighting for?" Evans asked. "I think in the '40s it was a lot easier to say, 'We know Nazis are bad.' I think it's a bit harder to know who's right and who's wrong today. I think that conflict that Steve's going through in the movie couldn't be more updated and more modern. What's right? Where's the line? Where do you draw it? It's so tricky, I wish I could tell you more."

Samuel L. Jackson says his character, SHIELD director Nick Fury, tries to help Cap come to grips with the 21st century as they work to unravel the mystery around The Winter Soldier. In the comic, the character is Cap's former sidekick who becomes a sleeper agent for the enemy. In the past, how the hero dealt with an enemy would be cut and dried, but not today.

"Now he's got to understand that the enemy's not black and white anymore," Jackson said. "It's not that guy over there and us over here. It's kind of gray. Some of those guys that were enemies before are now our allies in a kind of way. So you've got to wrap your head around that."

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and the film's producer, says fans looking for clues to the new "The Avengers" sequel should not miss the "Captain America" sequel.

The film, "much more than 'Iron Man 3' or 'Thor: The Dark World', is connected and the linchpin between 'Avengers' 1 and 'Avengers' 2," he said. "The events of 'Avengers' play directly into the events of 'Winter Soldier,' primarily in the fact that Cap is now in the modern day working with SHIELD, working with Nick Fury, working with Black Widow in a very good way. And the events of that movie will have a direct repercussion on the events of 'Avengers' 2."

Former POW and Man City keeper Bert Trautmann dies

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Bert Trautmann, a former German World War II prisoner of war who became Manchester City's goalkeeper and helped the team win the FA Cup despite a broken neck for the last 17 minutes of the 1956 final, has died, the German soccer federation said. He was 89.

The federation said Trautmann died in La Llosa, near Valencia, Spain, where he lived. Trautmann's wife Marlies told the federation he died Friday morning.

Trautmann had suffered two heart attacks this year but appeared to have recovered well, the federation said.

"Bert Trautmann was a great sportsman and a real gentleman," federation President Wolfgang Niersbach said. "He came as a soldier and war enemy to England and became a celebrated hero."

Manchester City called Trautmann one of the club's "greatest goalkeepers of all time and a true club legend."

"There are fewer better examples of the power of football to build bridges than Bert Trautmann," FIFA President Sepp Blatter said.

Trautmann made 545 appearances for City between 1949 and 1964 and was revered for his performance in the team's 1956 FA Cup final win over Birmingham.

In 2004, he was appointed an honorary Officer of the British Empire for his efforts to improve Anglo-German relations. He was also awarded the highest German decoration and once said his heart "beats for both countries."

Born in Bremen between the two world wars, Trautmann joined the Luftwaffe and served as a paratrooper during World War II, earning an Iron Cross. He was captured in Russia, escaped and was captured again by the British as the war drew to a close.

He was sent to a prisoner of war camp in Ashton-in-Makerfield, near Wigan, where Trautmann caught attention during soccer games played there.

Trautmann made England his adopted country and declined to be repatriated. He married locally, worked on a farm and later with a bomb disposal unit in Liverpool. His performances with the non-league club St. Helen Town often brought out crowds of 9,000 ? huge by the team's standards ? and caught the eye of Manchester City.

Trautmann joined the club in 1949, accompanied by the protest of 20,000 with memories of Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany still fresh.

During one of his first games in London, still bearing the signs of heavy damage from Germany's air raids, Trautmann overcame a hostile reception to play so well that at the end of the match, the players formed a line on either side of the tunnel and applauded him, while the Fulham crowd gave him a standing ovation.

Trautmann was the first German to play in a Wembley FA Cup final when City finished runner-up to Newcastle in 1955. One year later, Trautmann became the star of City's championship.

City had taken a 3-1 lead against Birmingham, and with 17 minutes to go Trautmann dived at the feet of onrushing forward Peter Murphy. The Birmingham player's knee collided with the City goalkeeper's neck, and Trautmann was knocked out.

At the time, no substitutions were allowed, and Trautmann, although unsteady, returned to his place between the posts, according to an account on City's website.

Trautmann made two more outstanding saves and then collided with his own defender, Dave Ewing, and had to be revived again before he could play on. While receiving his medal, Trautmann complained of a "stiff neck."

It was only three days later that an X-ray revealed a broken neck.

Trautmann was honored as the Football Writers' Player of the Year eight days before the final, the first foreigner to earn the honor.

"I played over 500 league games for City, but that moment is still the one people refer to. So it can be a little frustrating at times, because no matter how well I played during that time, people will still say, 'Ah, you're the fellow who broke his neck playing at Wembley,'" Trautmann once said.

After the final, Trautmann needed time to recover from injury and personal tragedy ? his 5-year-old son was struck and killed by a car. But he did and played on until he was 40.

During his career, he saved 60 percent of the penalties he faced.

Although a capable position player, he was forced into goal after getting hurt during a match. Tall and athletic, Trautmann was a natural.

He would later claim his training as a paratrooper made it easy for him to perform acrobatic dives because he knew how to fall to the ground without injuring himself, according to a biography posted on City's website.

He made his City debut in a 2-0 loss to Arsenal and played in 100 consecutive games before missing a match because of injury.

West Germany at the time selected only home-based players, and he never played for the country of his birth. When West Germany won the 1954 World Cup, he was a translator for the team.

Soviet Union goalkeeper Lev Yashin, considered by many to be the greatest ever, once said he knew only two world-class keepers ? himself and Trautmann.

After retiring, Trautmann helped in the development of soccer in Africa and worked on improving Anglo-German ties.

NBA Unanimously approves Hornets' return to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The National Basketball Association?announced Thursday night?that they unanimously approved the decision for?the Charlotte Bobcats?to take on the Charlotte Hornets name.

But fans of the Hornets weren't waiting until the big reveal to start celebrating.?

The mood was so confident amongst fans in the Queen City, that Charlotte's regularly scheduled "Alive After Five" party in the Epicenter has been redubbed "Fan Fest."

The Bobcats are bringing back some beloved players from the past including Muggsy Bogues to help build the excitement.?

The party was touted as family-friendly and have a?countdown to the live broadcast when the NBA commission renders its decision.

The official announcement was a long time coming for Hornets fans. "This was a gigantic piece of my childhood," Amanda Lackey told WBTV. "My Mom and I came to every game. I skipped my prom to be at a Hornets game. It's a big deal for me, and I am so excited to see them come back."

Fans we talked to said the name change is helping to bring back old fans and create new ones.

"We are excited. My son is a big basketball fan, so we are excited about the change from the Bobcats to the Hornets. My husband is born and raised in Charlotte. We are looking forward to the color change and the mascot change," Che Quarles said.

This has been a long time coming.? A grass roots effort was started to bring?the Hornets name back to Charlotte, since before?the New Orleans Hornets abandoned the name in favor or the Pelicans.???

The name change will take months to implement.

Charlotte's NBA franchise will still be known as the Bobcats, but will change to the Hornets for the 2014 season.?

The New Orleans Pelicans released a statement after the Bobcats announced they would make a donation to the team's pelican fund.

"The move was made possible by New Orleans Owner Tom Benson's 2012 decision to select a more regionally appropriate nickname for the Crescent City's NBA team, which had gone by "Hornets" since moving to Louisiana in 2002. New Orleans officially became the "Pelicans" on April 18 and will have a brand-new look in 2013-14. Charlotte will play one final season as the Bobcats in 2013-14, before making the change to Hornets.

In conjunction with the historic decision to return to its popular local nickname, the Charlotte franchise is making a donation to the Pelicans Gulf Coast Preservation Fund.

"We are very pleased to transition the Hornets name to Charlotte, where the name has a unique fit and meaning to their fans, much like Pelicans has to our fans and our region," Benson said. "Working together with the Charlotte organization we were able to make this happen with the fans of both communities benefiting and we look forward to working with them on finalizing the specifics of the transition. We are also very thankful to the Charlotte organization for their contribution to the Pelicans Gulf Coast Preservation Fund. It speaks to the positive nature when two teams work together for the better good of our game, our league and our communities."

The nickname "Hornets" has a very specific historic meaning to the people of Charlotte. During the Revolutionary War, upon experiencing significant local resistance, British general Lord Cornwallis wrote back to England that Charlotte was "a veritable hornet's nest of rebellion." The phrase quickly became a symbol of pride for the city. "Charlotte Hornets" was the nickname used by now-defunct baseball and football teams prior to the NBA's arrival there."

Huawei Spies For China, Says Former NSA And CIA Chief Michael Hayden

Huawei phone

AFP

The former head of the United States' Central Intelligence Agency Michael Hayden said on Friday it "goes without saying" that Chinese telecoms giant Huawei spies for Beijing.

Speaking to the Australian Financial Review, Hayden claimed China was engaged in unrestricted espionage against the West and said it was his belief that Huawei would have shared information with state agencies.

Asked whether Huawei represented an unambiguous national security threat to the US and Australia, Hayden replied: "Yes, I believe it does".

Britain, the United States and Australia have all raised concerns that Huawei's alleged ties to the Chinese state could see telecoms equipment supplied by the company used for spying and cyber-attacks.

Huawei denies it has any direct links to the Chinese state, but the US Congress last year called for its exclusion from US government contracts and it was also barred from bidding for contracts to build Australia's national broadband network.

The retired general said he believed Western intelligence networks had hard evidence that Huawei had spied on behalf of the Chinese state.

"I have no reason to question the belief that's the case," said Hayden, who retired from the CIA in 2009 and who prior to that served as head of the National Security Agency (NSA).

"That's my professional judgement. But as the former director of the NSA, I cannot comment on specific instances of espionage or any operational matters.

"And, at a minimum, Huawei would have shared with the Chinese state intimate and extensive knowledge of the foreign telecommunications systems it is involved with. I think that goes without saying."

Huawei's John Suffolk, who has previously described the company as the "piggy in the middle" of the broader dispute over hacking between China and the United States, reportedly dismissed Hayden's comments as tired, unsubstantiated and defamatory.

"It's time to put up or shut up," Suffolk, Huawei's global cyber security officer, told the newspaper.

Hayden said Huawei had approached him several years ago to be on the firm's American board, but it had failed to convince him it should be involved in critical communications infrastructure.

"This is not blind prejudice on my part. This was my considered view based on a four-decade career as an intelligence officer," he said.

"My conclusion was that, 'No, it is simply not acceptable for Huawei to be creating the backbone of the domestic telecommunications network in the United States, period.'

"And frankly this is where I think the state has a role to play -- to ensure we don't make decisions that compromise the foundations of our national security."

'Battlestar Galactica' Writer Working On Script For Sony Santa ...

And it?s not God of War.

Seasoned television screenwriter??Michael Angeli has been writing the script for an unannounced Sony Santa Monica game for the last two and a half years.

Speaking to Polygon at Comic-Con, Angeli added that? After the studio wrapped development on God of War: Ascension for PlayStation 3, the full team of about 150 staffers transitioned to work on the new and still unannounced project.

However due?to the unannounced nature of the project, Angeli said he couldn?t elaborate on the game or the platform, but said that his Battlestar Galactica work, as well as his journalism background, helped him land the writing gig.

So it seems as if Sony Santa Monica and Naughty Dog have taken up the same business model of becoming studios with two teams working on tried and true franchises like Uncharted and God of War, and new work like The Last of Us, and whatever Santa Monica is forging.

Can any tablet OS challenge Android and iOS?

Based on Microsoft's latest earnings report, its Surface RT is a flop. This, in turn, means that Windows RT has failed. But, there are many other would-be tablet operating system challengers to Google's Android and Apple's iOS. Seriously, though, do any of them have a real shot?

tablets
There are hundreds of millions of tablets out there, but will any significant number of them ever run anything besides Android or iOS?

Just over a third of Americans now own tablets. As time goes on, more and more of them will be buying tablets over PCs. By 2017, market research firm NPD predicts that we'll be buying six tablets for every single notebook. Of these tablets, most experts agree it's only a matter of time before Android is on top of the tablet mountain.

That's not to say Microsoft has no hopes for the tablet form factor. I believe Microsoft has a real shot of being a viable third tablet choice if they elect to place its Windows 8.1 family operating system across all devices?PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

Does anyone else have a chance? Blackberry may have given up, but there are many others who want to dethrone Android and iOS. Here, are the leading contenders in the order I rank their chances.

1) Firefox:?Firefox is actually ahead of Ubuntu on smartphones?with its Linux-based Firefox operating system. For applications, Firefox will rely upon Web-based HTML5 apps. It's an unproven route, but as we put more and more of our apps on the Web and the cloud, it may be a workable one.?

Unlike its other Linux-based rivals, Firefox OS smartphones, such as the Alcatel One Touch Fire and ZTE Open, are already shipping. Thanks to its Web browser, Firefox is better known outside of techie circles than Ubuntu and that's where the tablet audience lives.?Mozilla, Firefox's parent organization, has long ?had its eye on tablets?and, partnered with?Foxconn, its first engineering sample tablets have started to appear.

2) Ubuntu:?Ever since Canonical introduced the Ubuntu Unity interface I thought it had the potential to be a great tablet interface. While much of the news lately has been about Ubuntu's efforts to win supporters for Ubuntu on smartphones, Canonical has big plans for the Ubuntu tablet ?as well. Indeed, Ubuntu's founder, Mark Shuttleworth, has promised us that he'll be making a big announcement on July 22nd. I strongly suspect he'll be announcing major Ubuntu tablet news.

I've always been fond of Unity on devices, and I think Ubuntu has a real shot. For now, Firefox is ahead in actually shipping units. We'll see it's that still the case by year's end.?

3) Sailfish: When Nokia turned its back on the MeeGo mobile Linux project and bought into Windows Phone, five Nokia staffers started their own company, Jolla, to keep pursuing an open-source operating system approach, Sailfish OS. Unlike Mozilla and Tizen, Sailfish relies on the old Linux stand-by Qt QML, instead of HTML5 for its apps.

Sailfish is on the verge of shipping its first smartphone in the Asian market. After that, Jolla would be more than happy to ship tablets.

4) Tizen:?Tizen, like Firefox is an open-source, Linux-based mobile operating system that relies on HTML5 for apps. In theory, Tizen has Samsung's support. In practice, it's been an unwanted step-child without a clear roadmap. With its first device, a Samsung smartphone, pushed back from July to the fourth quarter, I doubt Tizen will ever live up to its promise.

That's a lot of potential players in the tablet space. All of them, except Microsoft, still aren't even really ready to compete yet. Perhaps in 2015, there will be a viable third-party tablet OS, but I really can't see it happening until then. In the meantime, Android and iOS will remain the top tablet dogs.

Microsoft Clears the Air on the Xbox One and NSA Spying Concerns

While much has been made of Microsoft's next-gen console, and it's laundry list of PR stumbles, most of those instances could be written off to inept management, or a lack of message focus.

The much more serious issue, one that goes beyond memes and corporate misscommunication, is the very real concern that Microsoft may have been forced to hand over confidential user data at the behest of the U.S. Government. Microsoft, and very specifically features to be bundled with the Xbox One,?were recently named by The Guardian?as participating in the United State's PRISM program. The government program requires companies like Yahoo, Apple, Google, and Microsoft to hand over massive caches of user data in the name of national security. Obviously, this doesn't engender the warmest feelings from users.

Leaked memos purport a continuing collaboration between Microsoft, the NSA, and the FBI. Microsoft, alongside the other companies mentioned, isnsists the leaks are innacurate. Microsoft has even gone as far as stating that the leaked reports of information-gathering are false and they have provided no 'direct data' to the government. The problem with that statement is Microsoft's ownership of Skype.

According to The Guardian,?Skype signed on with PRISM in 2010, before its absorbtion by Microsoft.?"The audio portions of these sessions have been processed correctly all along, but without the accompanying video. Now, analysts will have the complete 'picture'."?

Microsoft releaed a statement on?technet blog?clarifying their role in the PRISM program:

?We do not provide any government with direct access to emails or instant messages. ?Like all providers of communication services, we are sometimes obligated to comply with lawful demands from governments to turn over content for specific accounts, pursuant to a search warrant or court order.?

Furter elaborating the role Skype plays in government surveilance,

?Looking forward, as Internet-based voice and video communications increase, it is clear that governments will have an interest in using (or establishing) legal powers to secure access to this kind of content to investigate crimes or tackle terrorism??Microsoft remains committed to responding only to valid legal demands for specific user account information. We will not provide governments with direct or unfettered access to customer data or encryption keys.?

What do you think? Does this put any worries you may have had to rest? Let us know.

Thrillist: Ranked: The Best Wedding Passed Appetizers

    2013-07-19-sliders.jpeg

Summers tend to be packed with weddings, and that's a great thing, because it means people can still connect meaningfully in this increasingly isolating world of ours, and that those people are likely going to hire waiters to walk around with trays full of glorious foodstuffs.

But which of these passed morsels of appetizer-y goodness should you seek out with the greatest fervor? We've taken the liberty of figuring that out for you, but first some ground rules and criteria. First, the committee attempted to identify the most commonplace options that tend to repeat themselves across multiple weddings. From there, the factors weighed in ranking them, in no particular order, were: Ease of consumption, consistency of execution, ability to remain appealing in the face of cooling temperatures, and flavor. On with the rankings!

    12. Caprese Skewers: These are a staggeringly common choice to appease the vegetarians in the crowd. They can be perfectly pleasant, particularly if tomatoes are in season, but no one's exactly salivating wondering when the salad on a stick guy is coming back around with his tray. Also, you're awkwardly left holding the skewer afterwards, and once you accumulate a few of them it's a dead giveaway that you're the fatty who can't lay off the free apps.

    11. Chicken Skewers: Sometimes these are satay-style with some peanut sauce, and sometimes folks go teriyaki because anything with peanuts served to a large group is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Regardless, the chicken tends to dry out a bit, there's a fair amount of gnawing to do before you can go back to conversing like a normal person, and again there's the leftover skewer problem.

    10. Mini Quiche: Whether standing in as another vegetarian option or mercifully studded with tiny flecks of bacon or some other pork product, these little bundles of Frenchiness leave a little something to be desired, especially if they've cooled a bit any you start getting that "scrambled eggs that have been left out a bit too long at the free hotel buffet that you weren't all that excited about but it's like, you already paid for it so whatever" taste, know what I mean?

Samsung May Soon Release Snapdragon 800 Equipped GT-I9506 Galaxy S4 Globally

At the risk of severely annoying early adopters, Samsung may be poised to offer a new and more powerful version of the Galaxy S4 later this year. Recently we have seen Samsung release an amped up version of the SGS4 in their home country of South Korea. It contained Advanced LTE (LTE-A) and the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor on board. For the most part international markets weren't too bummed out about it because it was after-all a limited release in the home country of the product. That may be poised to change soon however.

According to a report from a Korean news site, a new global version of this more advanced, Snapdragon 800 equipped Galaxy S4 is likely to be coming to market before the end of this year. An AnTuTu benchmark for a device with the model GT-i9506 just showed up online and it contains a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor inside. According to the report, this device is likely to be launched at IFA in September at the same time as the Galaxy Note 3.

Of course, in the long run, the fact that this device scores a few thousand points higher in some benchmark probably doesn't really translate into a real-world difference in user experience. More than likely, if you put both versions of the SGS4 next to each other, 99% of folks would not be able to tell which one was which unless you told them. Still, for hardcore tech-head junkies we can see feeling a bit miffed by this. What do you thin? Is it too soon for Samsung to release an improved "refresh" of the SGS4?
