Cool, Clever Trends Help Personal Branding! | Business 2 Community

I have been watching, following and studying trends for many years. To see how demographics, events, cycles all intersect, converge and impact our lives in such immediate and long lasting ways is fascinating! The financial and banking collapse at the end of 2008, was a long time in coming, but once it hit it changed things dramatically for all of us.

The great news is there is opportunity in change and change in opportunity.

Here are some very cool, clever consumer trend ideas that have developed and emerged that can present great opportunity for branding yourself and your business. The global trend site Trendwatching.com offers monthly briefings on trends they see impacting business, sales, lifestyle, media and consumerism.

Newism

?The ?new? has never been hotter, as the entire world, from emerging to mature economies is now creating new products, services and experiences on a daily, if not hourly basis?.

The ?speed of new? is quite astounding and is our current, radical reality. We have come to expect it and are trying to keep pace with it.

Creating and Innovation Outpacing Declining

?Despite recessions, bank runs and collapsing currencies more new products, services and experiences are being launched , created and emerging in every B2C industry?.

It is amazing and inspiring that people and companies are responding with such innovation, resilience and perseverance! Once we accept how things are, we can get on with making and getting the most out of and from them.

The Speed of FSTR

?Everything is getting FSTR in the the online world, with its relentless acceleration and amplification ? of information, of excitement, of attention?. We have witnessed the social phenomena Instagram with 10 million users in under a year, products too, such as Pebble raising over USD 10 million in 37 days on Kickstarter and Taco Bell sold 100 million of its new Doritos Locos Tacos in 10 weeks, making it the chain?s fastest ever product launch.

Own Less and Re-Commerce

?For consumers who?ve embraced OWNER-LESS solutions, renting or sharing everything from cars to clothes to electronics, perpetual upgrades and ?new? experiences are but a booking away?. The RECOMMERCE trend now offers brand buy-backs, exchange plans, online platforms and mobile marketplaces, offering smart and convenient options for consumers to ?trade in to trade up?.

We are all looking for ways we can downsize, re-size, streamline, re-use, re-purpose to save and simplify.

The Value in Heritage Brands

There will still be endless value in heritage brands, known to deliver constant, trusted quality. There will always be value in well-told, compelling stories about tradition and the local?.

Brand longevity, especially now, is a relentless challenge and a major accomplishment for any personal brand and company.

?Talk to Me In Person? Actually Preferred

In spite of and regardless of the major shift to the web and online, people still do prefer talking in person! This is great news for the importance of building strong, personal relationships in business.

MarketingCharts.com reports: ?Compared to the results across 25 markets, in which an average of 81% preferred to talk in person, the US is slightly above-average in this preference?.

They remind us that, ?For brands, new and established, it boils down to capturing and holding consumers? attention. While consumers? attention spans might be shorter and shorter, the rewards can be instant and massive?. Connecting in person can only enhance those rewards.

What trends are impacting you the most? How can you apply, adapt and use current trends to grow your business and personal brand?

The Apple Maps furor is overblown

57 min.

Do not, I repeat, do not use Apple's new Maps app for iOS 6 ? if you live on the Falkland Islands, or plan on visiting in the near future. Seriously, you will be lost.

If you're in Seattle, or any other major U.S. city, you should be fine. In fact, if you upgrade from iOS 5 to iOS 6, you get passably good turn-by-turn navigation functionality ? something you would have had to pay for on the old iOS version ? for free.

That Maps thing that everyone and their mom seems to be yowling about? The criticism is out of proportion to the actual flaws.?

And as flawed as it may be (and we'll get to that), it makes sense for Apple do this.?The iPhone maker decided, sensibly, to push its chief competitor off of one of its main stages, after years of providing a pre-loaded revenue stream.

By swapping out a Google-powered Maps with a more?homegrown one, what does Apple bring??

The big boon for iOS users is?a?free turn-by-turn navigator, which can?get you from Point A to Point B with Siri's robotronically soothing voice and 3-D visuals that are at times so fun to look at, they could prove to be a distraction. (The renderings can be dazzling on highway on-ramps, for instance.)

There's also?Yelp integration: Pop-up star ratings appear on restaurants and landmarks that you search for, and when you click through, you immediately pull up the Yelp page. As someone who can't stand Yelp reviewers but nevertheless uses Yelp data religiously, I look forward to saving time and effort by using this.

Where the "fly-over" 3-D photo imagery?feature is enabled, it looks?great, and delivers higher-resolution satellite?imagery than you could get on the old Maps app.

As far as I can tell, those sponsored landmarks ??the ones?that netted Google some extra cash but never served you any purpose ? are gone. Yes, big?up to Apple for not shoving ads in your face when you're searching for a barber?shop. That was getting annoying in iOS 5, and I'm glad it's gone in iOS 6.

Apple's?traffic reporting is ...?different. Instead of the spaghetti of green, yellow and red that you'd see on a Google map, you see chokepoints highlighted in red lines, and some scary-looking alerts here and there.?I haven't decided yet if it's sensible minimalism or just missing information (and part of me misses seeing green and thinking "Go go go!"),?but you may actually prefer it.

The iOS 6 update brings all of that, for free, and if you don't like it, you can just keep on using ?Google Maps.?

"Wait, what??" you ask. "Didn't Apple kill off Google Maps?" No, and if you don't believe me, click here.?

If you visit Google Maps on an iPhone's Safari browser, you can even tap "Add to Home Screen" and voila, you have a Google Maps Web app that does most or all that the old native Maps app did.?

Google is sure to launch a?native Maps app for iOS shortly?(just like it did when Apple discontinued the pre-loaded YouTube player). When that happens, the map experience will only get better. Through competition. Apple vs. Google in a fight where no matter who loses, you win.

The ugly
But yes, there are flaws in Apple's Maps app.?

Bridges can?look crazy, rural roads can go missing ? more?egregiously, while one train station disappeared in London, an?airport suddenly?sprung up in Ireland.

Besides the bugs, a big Apple Maps issue is the lack of public transit information. Google's database can tell you when your bus is scheduled to arrive, while Apple's new service can't even tell you what bus to take. (There are, of course, many free iOS apps that can, along with the aforementioned?Google Web app.)

In a measured response to the outrage, Silicon Valley heavy (and Apple veteran) Jean-Louis Gass?e explained that, while the maps can be messy, the problem is not cartographical in nature. Apple simply didn't deliver the message correctly:

The demo was flawless ? but not a word from the stage about the app?s limitations, no self-deprecating wink, no admission that iOS Maps is an infant that needs to learn to crawl before walking, running, and ultimately lapping the frontrunner, Google Maps.

Map databases can be improved in realtime,?and?though?Apple and its partners are clearly?having growing pains?trying to merge map data, 3-D renders and aerial photography, that's bound to improve.?Consumer Reports echoes this in a press release, stressing the map database's ability to improve without requiring an?iOS update:

Maps feels like a new application rolled out in beta form.?Given the ease for pushing app updates to users and the server-side nature of Maps (meaning, the maps and other data are downloaded on the fly as needed), a rapid evolution is quite possible.

As a free application, Maps is definitely a welcomed addition to the iPhone universe, although at this moment, it does not compete well with established, third-party nav apps nor dedicated portable navigation devices.

So, let's review the facts:?

A) There are flaws in Apple's Maps database.

B) These flaws very likely do not affect you in any way.

C) These flaws will be fixed and served up without you updating any software.

D) There is a lack of public transit information, which may or may not affect you, but is partially remedied by apps.

E) You now get free turn-by-turn navigation and instant links to Yelp pages ? and no ads.

F) GPS-enabled Google Maps are still?available on iPhones and iPads?for free, through the Safari browser.

G) A Google Maps app for iOS will likely be here soon, too.

Now that you know all of that, are you still mad? Or are you asking yourself, why was I ever mad? Let me know. I don't want to apologize for Apple on this ? in fact I agree with Jean-Louis Gass?e and Consumer Reports, going so far as to say that?Apple should publicly brand Maps "beta" software, like Siri ? but let's all calm down.?

It's not the end of the world, it's just the beginning of one new way to look at it.

Friends, Yoga, Love and a Whole Lot of Gratitude

Six months have flown by and now that summer?s over and I?m 15lbs heavier with a belly out-to-here, we?re just about in countdown mode for Peach?s arrival. ?Everyday, Nora tells me, ?Wow, Mama, your tummy is getting really, really big!? and perfect strangers now feel comfortable asking me when I?m due and what I?m having ? a question which occasionally still throws me off in moments I?m busy enough focusing on Nora that I forget there?s another human sharing my body. ?Those moments of forgetfulness will soon be far behind us, though, as our excitement grows along with baby Peach?s ever more frequent kicks and rolls. ?This baby is already making sure his/her sister doesn?t get all the attention: anytime I sit down to read with Nora, Peach starts dancing behind my belly button, and the last few nights, lying curled up with Nora on her bed, I?ve felt the first few fingers of heartburn crawl their way up?the?center of my chest.

Even with moments of discomfort, I?m getting more and more excited about meeting our little Peach, especially now that we?ve finally sorted out the home versus hospital birth decision. ?In the last month, we were happily able to commit to homebirth, thanks to the incredible?generosity?of our friends and family. ?I tried my hardest to get our insurance to make an exception and pay for at least part of my prenatal, birth, or postpartum care to no avail (that would be the downside to having state subsidized Commonwealth Care). ?And just when I thought that there was no hope in sight, just when I was entertaining crazy notions (like ?What if I have an ?accidental? homebirth and just call the paramedics to show up at the last possible moment so it won?t be an unassisted delivery, but then refuse to go with them after Peach is born?), just when Chris and I were getting incredibly discouraged about our finances and what they mean for our birth choices, two amazing things happened. ?My dad?s mom called me out of the blue and surprised us by saying she wanted to help pay for our homebirth, and my amazing friend Jess offered to throw me a baby shower/fundraiser, enlisting the help of my friend Caitlin who generously offered to teach a free yoga class as part of the fundraiser event. ?Between my grandmother?s amazing offer and Jess? optimism about fundraising, Chris and I started to think we might actually be able to have the birth of our dreams.

Jess made adorable invitations, img_5120 she?reached out to women far and wide, and, along with Caitlin, put together an incredible celebration of motherhood and birth in celebration of Peach. ?On Saturday evening, I walked up to the yoga room excited and unsure of what to expect. ?There, I saw beautiful decorations honoring pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and sweet, delicious babies.?? 2012_0911 ?? img_5108 ?? 2012_0912 ?Jess had thought of every little detail, right down to an amazing diaper cake and peach party favors. ?? img_5112 ?? img_5103 Clearly, Martha Stewart has nothing on Jess? party planning and hostess skills.

Also waiting for me at the Yoga Room was a circle of women, all of whom were thrilled to help celebrate Peach and share their supportive joy for our homebirth plans. ?Sunny, my friend and our doula, started by having us pass red yarn around our circled yoga mats, each of us naming our mothers and their mothers before them for as many generations as we could name, until the yarn had made a complete circle around the room linking each of us and our mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers together as a community of women. ?? img_5065 ?Then we each cut our piece from the circle of yarn and tied it around our wrists to be worn until after Peach is born, as a symbol of our connectedness and their support through my birth journey. ?It was the perfect opening to the goddess flow yoga and meditation practice through which Caitlin guided us. ?? img_5075 ?After that class, I felt completely centered, uplifted by all the women both physically and spiritually present, and inspired by the readings Caitlin shared. ? img_5105 (Jess, Caitlin, Me, & Sunny)

By the time I got home and had a chance to really look at the diaper cake Jess had made, I was teary-eyed. ?The three flowered layers were covered in notes and messages of love and support from friends who were not able to attend. ? 2012_0910 ?Women from Nantucket to New York and Texas all sent love and blessings for me, Peach, our family, and a beautiful birth. ?And with their kind words, they sent a greater gift than Chris, Nora, and I could have ever expected: enough money to help us pay one-third the cost of our home birth.

Yesterday, I sat down and tried to write this blog post and I was so overcome with gratitude that I could barely find words. ?Even today, I am near?speechless. ?Not only do I have amazing friends on island who will spend time watching YouTube videos to learn how to make the perfect diaper cake, who will carefully select readings, music and postures to create the perfect motherhood flow in my honor, and who will come together to join me as a community of women, but I also have friends all across the country who understand how important this birth is to my family and are willing to help make it happen, even if it?s not the birth they would choose for themselves. ? img_5101 As much as I loved Nora?s birth and as empowering and transformative as it was, I now know that the biggest thing I was missing from that experience was a community of women supporting me through each step of the way. ? ?Three years later, I have found that community across thousands of miles and I cannot be more grateful. ?Over the next couple of days, I will be writing notes of thanks individually to each person and family who has shown their love and support, but in the meantime, please know that Chris and I both thank you more than words can say. ?We love you all and can?t wait to continue sharing our homebirth journey with you. ?Namaste.

Microsoft Remains Tight-Lipped on iOS 6 Bing Maps App

Apple launched the new iPhone 5 and iOS 6 a few days ago, with the latter bringing an important change when it comes to the applications it features. The new operating system installed on iPhones doesn?t feature Google Maps anymore, but instead Apple decided to install its very own mapping service called ?Maps.?

However, the way it works made many laugh and Microsoft knows it very well since one of its research and development facilities has been listed as a gas station.

The Redmond-based software giant has an immense opportunity to make it into the world of iPhone apps with its very own Bing Maps tool that already offers an iOS version.

The only problem is that Microsoft hasn?t updated the application in the last month and with Apple?s Maps doing such terrible mistakes, many believe that it?s the time for Microsoft to join the game.

The company, on the other hand, doesn?t want to comment on the matter and according to a Neowin story, it doesn?t even intend to release any information on future updates.

?Bing has a solid existing experience for iPhone customers. We don?t have anything to share about future plans or updates,? the company said in a statement.

Nonetheless, Google is apparently planning to take the most out of this situation and is reportedly developing its own mapping service for iOS service. The Mountain View-based search company hasn?t provided any information on the matter, but sources familiar with the issue suggest that Google is indeed very interested in getting back on iPhones with a specially developed mapping solution.

However, it remains to be seen whether Apple approves the app to be showcased in Apple Store.

National Literacy Month: Mind the (Language) Gap

This guest post is written by Rachael Alexander, National Manager of Literacy Initiatives at City Year Headquarters

How does hearing the word VOCABULARY make you feel?? Do you flash back to elementary school where you had lists of words you had to learn, memorizing definitions and correct spelling?? Do you think about reading a sentence in a story or an article and just pausing for a moment to appreciate the perfect combination of words saying exactly the right thing?? Do you imagine learning a foreign language and the fact that all words are inherently new vocabulary words?

If you are like me, hearing vocabulary makes you think of all of these things?the confluence of letters, sounds, words and meaning rushing together and compacting themselves into a single word.

We know from extensive research on both oral and written language acquisition that there exist incredible disparities in this country.

A study by E. Hoff in 2003 in the journal Child Development identifies a difference in experiencing language?in terms of exposure to both written and spoken forms?as a key factor in a child?s language development.

Children with fewer words in their cache will struggle to express themselves, to compete on a larger scale with other cohorts for jobs or advancement opportunities, even to communicate about the world around them.

So, here?s the thing: we can DO something about this.? Corps members are with students all day in school, with a myriad of opportunities to speak, use, point out and expose new words to learners.? Complex, rich vocabulary exposure (especially words being said aloud) is a necessary ?stepping stone? to students being able to recognize these words in print.? Recognizing words in print means an increased likelihood of deep comprehension as well as increased chances that the student will use the word independently in the future.? Vocabulary equals empowerment.?

Last year in Cleveland, a Team Leader had an idea?putting students first?to encourage high school students to attend after school programming.? The concept was simple: come to afterschool, learn about various aspects of hip hop culture.? The history, fashion, visual art and spoken word/lyrics of hip hop were all potential areas of exploration for participants.? At the end of the year, there would be a showcase of student work in these four areas at a school-wide event.

What made this program incredibly exciting for teachers and corps members alike were all of the opportunities to fold in listening, speaking, reading and writing experiences, all in the service of engaging and relevant material for the learners in the school.? From writing ?artist statements? to holding debate-style discussions on lyrics, connotations and word choice, students interacted deeply with specific vocabulary at many levels without overt or explicit instruction.

Harnessing words to articulate opinions, to reflect on new learning, and to express creative thought became a primary focus for the team and the students.? This type of supported exposure to words doesn?t require training and it doesn?t have to be tested, but it certainly has a positive net effect on the learners involved.? We can create deep interactive activities around building vocabulary for learners and shift to providing vocabulary-rich experiences for them rather than rote memorization.? As with all learning, the key is to start with the student at the center and to build creatively from there based on strong, research-based (literacy) practice.

Self-inflating tire tech saves you at the pump

1 day

When was the last time you checked your tire pressure? If you?re scratching your head, you might want to put a set of Goodyear?s new self-inflating tires on your ride.

The company?s Air Maintenance Technology was rolled out of the lab this week for debut at a car show in Germany. Commercial truckers will be the first to put the rubber to test, but a consumer version is in the works.

As illustrated in the graphic above, a regulator in the tire senses when tire-inflation pressure drops below a pre-set point and opens to allow air flow into the pumping tube. As the tire rolls, deformation flattens the tube, pushing air through the tire to the inlet valve and then into the tire cavity.

All this technology, in Goodyear?s words, eliminates the need for ?external inflation pressure intervention.?

The hassle of interventions aside, maintaining properly inflated tires is key for fuel economy and the life of tire. For every 10 psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure lost, for example, there?s a corresponding one percent loss in miles per gallon, Goodyear explained in a news release.?

A one percent loss in miles per gallon translates to $627 down the drain for a truck that gets 6.6 miles per gallon, drives 100,000 miles a year, and fills up with diesel that costs $4.10 per gallon, according to the company.

Properly inflated tires will also last longer and handle better on the road, Goodyear notes.?

While there?s no price listed yet for the tires, assuming the fuel savings and reduced tire replacement costs pencil out over the life of the vehicle, the technology seems like a wise investment with the added bonus of reducing carbon dioxide emissions via the fuel savings.

And, what?s more, no longer will you need to think about checking your tire pressure, which you probably haven?t done for a long time anyway.?

Key ally quits Indian government amid uproar over reforms

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The biggest partner in Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's shaky coalition formally withdrew on Friday over big-ticket economic reforms that have cheered investors but sparked nationwide protests.

The Trinamool Congress pulled out its six ministers and 19 MPs, reducing Singh's coalition to a minority government and bringing even more instability to an already volatile political landscape. While there appears to be no immediate risk of the government falling, Singh will struggle to push forward with his economic reform agenda and get legislation through parliament.

His coalition will now have to rely on the outside support of two powerful regional parties that have their own political agendas and are equally hostile to reforms such as allowing foreign supermarkets to set up shop in the country.

"Barring a political perfect storm, we now believe that the current government is likely to limp along through the scheduled end of its five-year term in mid-2014," said David Sloan, an analyst at political risk research consultant Eurasia.

The prime minister is due to make an unusual televised address to the nation at 8 p.m. (1430 GMT) to try to tame the popular outrage. Many parts of India were brought to a halt on Thursday by a nationwide strike called to protest the reforms.

PRESSING ON WITH REFORM

Despite the backlash, the government pressed ahead with more reforms on Friday, slashing a tax on overseas borrowing by Indian firms and implementing a scheme to encourage individuals to invest in the stock market.

The cabinet may also approve measures next week to allow greater foreign investment in the insurance sector.

Indian stock indexes rose more than 2 percent on Friday to their highest since July 2011 on hopes of further reforms.

"It's all very positive. Actually, the way the market has endorsed it, that itself is a good testimony of whatever the government has done after a long period of market-perceived inactivity," said Sunil Agarwal, head of the institutional client group at Deutsche Bank India.

Singh has faced withering criticism from Indian business leaders, economists and foreign investors for inaction as economic growth slumped to 5.5 percent. Now that he has taken action, he finds himself under fire from coalition allies and political opponents keen to find political advantage ahead of state polls later this year and national elections in 2014.

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, the firebrand leader of West Bengal state, had threatened on Wednesday to pull her ministers out of the coalition if the reforms were not rolled back by Friday. The government rebuffed the threat and formally approved the retail reform on Thursday.

The cabinet could approve a proposal to ease restrictions on foreign investment in the insurance sector, raising the cap to 49 percent from 26 percent, a Finance Ministry official said on condition of anonymity. It still needs to clear parliament, however, and that is not seen likely in the foreseeable future.

Police probe alleged poisoning of dogs in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) ? Cruelty to animals has long been a problem in Russia, with animal protection laws loosely enforced and packs of stray dogs, uncared for by the state, left to roam the streets of Moscow.

But that cruelty has taken on a new dimension and sparked a public outcry with a recent spree of dog poisonings in a posh neighborhood in Moscow. Dozens of dogs have died, allegedly after eating poison concealed in scraps of meat left in a park where pets were being walked.

On Friday, police opened a criminal investigation.

Vera Lesovets, whose 5-year-old Corgie died that way, blames what she calls dog hunting, a hobby gaining ground in the Russian online community.

"They have websites," she said. "They write how they kill them, post photographs, tell you which poison is better and where to buy it."

Allies use power of purse against Syrian regime

SCHEVENINGEN, Netherlands (AP) ? A coalition including the United States, the European Union and the Arab League met Thursday to plot new ways of isolating the regime of Syria's President Bashar Assad, as a Syrian opposition leader warned that sanctions alone won't bring the regime down.

The group called "Friends of the Syrian People" was set up in February after the U.N. Security Council was unable to reach agreement on a resolution condemning Syria's government, due to opposition from Russia and China.

On Thursday, financial experts joined representatives of the group at their meeting in The Hague, Netherlands, to help member countries understand how Syria may be using dual-use technologies and front companies to get around the existing sanctions, which include an embargo on oil and arms trade with Syria by participating nations. Twelve more countries have joined the 60-member coalition, committing also to block Syrian financial transactions, and enforce a travel ban on the country's top leaders.

The uprising against the Syrian government began in March 2011 as part of Arab Spring protests, and intensified after Assad's government used the country's military in an attempt to end them with violence. The United Nations estimates that at least 18,000 people have been killed as a result of the fighting, most of them civilians. More than 1.5 million people have been displaced, many fleeing as refugees to neighboring countries such as Turkey and Jordan.

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal said the sanctions are having an effect, despite non-participation by Russia, China and Iran, citing sharp fall in Syria's oil exports.

"The EU took 90 percent of Syria's oil," before the sanctions were applied, he said. "It turns out to be hard for the regime to sell oil elsewhere."

Abrahim Miro, a member of the Syrian Governing Council ? an umbrella organization of Syrian opposition groups cooperating to overthrow the government ? said that the sanctions alone will not bring Assad's regime down. He said the sanctions, together with armed resistance by the Syrian Free Army "will actually cause the economic heart attack and also the military heart attack of the regime."

Miro said that Syria's continued trade with Iraq and Iran ? which were not present at the Thursday meeting ? is a major source of concern for the opposition.

Abdo Hussameldin, a former official in Syria's oil ministry, who in March became the highest-ranking member of the government to defect, said that the economic sanctions were demoralizing and delegitimizing the regime in the eyes of the country's people. But he agreed with Miro that the sanctions alone won't force Assad from office as long as his regime continues to get financial support from countries such as Russia, Iraq, Iran, Venezuela and Lebanon.

U.S. electric car policy to cost $7.5 billion by 2019: CBO

(Reuters) - U.S. federal policies to promote electric vehicles will cost $7.5 billion through 2019 and have "little to no impact" on overall national gasoline consumption over the next several years, the Congressional Budget Office said in a report issued on Thursday.

Consumer tax credits for buying electric vehicles, which can run as high as $7,500 per vehicle, will account for about 25 percent of the $7.5 billion cost, the CBO said.

The rest of the cost comprises of $2.4 billion in grants to battery makers and projects to promote electric vehicles as well as $3.1 billion in loans to auto companies designed to spur production of fuel-efficient vehicles.

Many of these initiatives were initiated in 2009 under President Barack Obama, but the loan program was authorized in 2007 under the Bush administration.

Producing all-electric cars and plug-in hybrids is part of the auto industry's solution to reach increasingly stringent fuel economy standards designed to cut emissions and lessen the United States' dependence on oil.

U.S. government standards mandate that by 2025, automakers to show corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) of 54.5 miles per gallon or about 39 miles per gallon in real world driving.

The tax credits will increase sales of EVs, hybrids and more fuel-efficient gas-powered models and help boost the average fuel economy of automakers' fleets, the CBO said. The federal tax credits apply to the first 200,000 electric vehicles sold by each manufacturer.

But these sales will leave room for automakers to continue to sell models with low fuel economy, the CBO said.

"The more electric and other high-fuel-economy vehicles that are sold because of the tax credits, the more low-fuel-economy vehicles that automakers can sell and still meet the standards," according to the report.

As a result, tax credits will have "little or no impact on the total gasoline use and greenhouse gas emissions of the nation's vehicle fleet over the next several years."

In the study, the CBO looked at the tax credits and other federal policies for plug-in hybrid vehicles like the General Motors Co Chevrolet Volt and fully battery-electric vehicles like the Nissan Motor Co Leaf.

The CBO said it compared similar-sized electric and gas-powered vehicles with average fuel economy ratings.

"General Motors is committed to technological innovations like the Chevy Volt and to help our customers use little or no gas and save money and the pump," said Heather Rosenker, GM spokeswoman in Washington.

"We'll keep our eyes on designing and building cars and defer the policy debate to the policy makers," she said.

CREDITS CAN'T RECOUP EV COSTS

While drivers of these electric vehicles use less gasoline and emit less greenhouse gas such as carbon dioxide, the cost to the government can be high, the CBO found. The U.S. government will spend anywhere from $3 to $7 for each gallon of gasoline saved by consumers driving electric vehicles.

Proponents of government spending on advanced vehicles say the start-up costs will be high, but U.S. consumers could still recoup much of that investment over time.

"The people the report often know the cost of everything and the value of nothing," said Dan Weiss, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. "They are overestimating the costs of these programs and undervaluing the benefits."

Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and vehicles that have no gasoline engines at all are so far low. In 2012, through August, 13,497 Chevrolet Volt have been sold, and Nissan has sold only 4,228 Leaf.

By 2016, each auto manufacturer is to meet a CAFE standard of 35.5 miles per gallon, up from the current average of 29.7 mpg. By 2025, the CAFE standard is to be 54.5 mpg.

CAFE is the corporate average fuel economy, the theoretical standard used to determine if each auto manufacturer is meeting fuel efficiency requirements.

However, that is not the "real world" fuel economy ratings as measured by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This "real world" EPA rating is what is shown on the window sticker for new cars at U.S. dealerships.

The costs of electric vehicles -- fully electric and plug-in hybrid electric -- are much higher than similar-sized gasoline vehicles, and the federal tax credit of $7,500 per vehicle is not enough to bridge the gap, the CBO said.

The CBO said an average plug-in hybrid vehicle with a battery capacity of 16 kilowatt-hours is eligible for the maximum tax credit of $7,500.

"However, that vehicle would require a tax credit of more than $12,000 to have roughly the same lifetime costs as a comparable conventional or traditional hybrid vehicle," the CBO said.
