o Joint pain
o Joint swelling

Causes of arthritis-
The major cause of the pain associated with arthritis is by damage of the joints. Joints are made up of the following parts:
o Cartilage: It is a hard, but slick, coating on the ends of bones.

Cartilage allows bones of the joint to slide smoothly over each other.
o Joint capsule: Joint capsule is a tough membrane encloses all the joint parts.
o Synovium: Synovium is a thin membrane lines the joint capsule and secretes synovial fluid. It lubricates the joint and nourishes the cartilage.

Damage to the joints
The two main type of arthritis damage the joints in the following ways.
o Osteoarthritis- In osteoarthritis, wear-and-tear damage to cartilage can result in bone grinding directly on bone. This can cause pain and restricts the movement. This wear and tear can occur over many years, or it can be hastened by a joint injury or infection.
o Rheumatoid arthritis- In rheumatoid arthritis, the body's immune system attacks joints and inflames the synovium. This causes swelling, redness and pain. The disease can eventually destroy cartilage and bone within the joint over the time.

KISS needs a roadie ? and wants to hire a veteran

KISS, who will tour with Motley Crue this summer, has pledged to hire a veteran to work as a roadie.

KISS needs a roadie?? and they want to hire a veteran to help out.

The band, who are touring with Motley Crue this summer, have been long-time supporters of the U.S. military, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Wounded Warrior Project. Watch their troop salute here.?

They're participating in Hiring our Heroes to give a job to a touring set carpenter who will travel with the band from July 14 through Sept. 25.

The lucky veteran who gets the gig will be part of the team that assembles the KISS stage set, helps run effects during the show and takes down the set afterwards. Applicants do not need to be a trained carpenter, but will work long hours.?

A new study concludes that noise from humans can have an effect on plant life, in addition to wildlife.

Mounting evidence shows that noise from traffic, oil drilling, Navy sonar and other technology can make nearby animals scatter or change their behavior it.

New research takes a broader perspective and asks: How does noise affect natural communities? The results indicate that noise has the potential to trigger cascading effects that could alter the structure of these communities, known as ecosystems.

In nature, it's unusual for one factor to change in isolation; a change in one animal's behavior, for example, will likely have ripple effects on whatever it eats and whatever eats it.

Compressors running nonstop at the wells generate a droning roar, which at the study sites could be compared with the sound of a lower-pitched vacuum cleaner several feet away, said lead researcher Clinton Francis, postdoctoral fellow at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in North Carolina.

The researchers compared these sites to others located farther away, where noise consisted of an occasional bird call or, more rarely, a distant plane or car, Francis told LiveScience in an email. [Shhh! 10 Ways to Quiet National Parks]

Not all species lose out because of human noise ? some can benefit ? but if any play important ecosystem roles, such as pollinating plants, dispersing seeds or preying on other species, the effects of noise could trickle down to other members of the community, according to Francis.

To see how noise at the New Mexico wells affected pollination, the researchers put out artificial flowers resembling a common flower, the scarlet gilia, pollinated by black-chinned hummingbirds in both types of sites. They found that the hummingbird visits were five times more common at the noisy sites, and more pollen was also transferred among fake flowers at the noisy sites ? good news for flowers at noisy sites.

This wasn't a surprise, as previous research has shown that the hummingbirds actually prefer noisy sites; this may be because their predators, western scrub jays that eat the hummingbirds' nestlings, flee human noise, Francis and colleagues suggest.

When looking at how noise changed the fate of seeds from one of the dominant trees in the ecosystem, pi?on pines, the researchers found evidence of the opposite effect. Seedlings at quiet sites were four times more abundant than at noisy ones. The team attributes this to differences in the animals picking up the seeds.

Western scrub jays store the seeds they find for later meals, but many of these seeds go unrecovered and germinate, giving the plants an opportunity to spread. The noise-sensitive scrub jays only showed up at the quiet sites. Meanwhile, mice, which are more inclined to eat the seeds, showed up more frequently at the noisy sites ? bad news for pi?on pines at noisy sites.

Over the long term, this dynamic could mean fewer pi?on pines in noisy areas. This change, too, would ripple out, since hundreds of species ? fungi, insects, plants, mammals and birds ? are closely associated with the pines, Francis said.

"The problem is that the full effects of noise exposure may not be felt by the ecosystem for many decades, perhaps even long after gas wells are gone," Francis told LiveScience in an email, explaining that the pines and the other dominant tree, the Utah juniper, grow slowly and live long lives.

Francis expects similar, indirect effects in ecosystems located at other noisy locations.

The research appears in the March 21 issue of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Because, after all, right now, if you want to get a drink after a day hiking or biking around the lake, your options include a water fountain or ... well, a water fountain.

Turns out, according to some folks at Dallas City Hall, this has been a subject in which Mayor Mike Rawlings has been interested since his tenure as Park Board president. But for now, all the mayor's chief of staff, Paula Blackmon, is willing to say on the subject is this: "White Rock Lake is a gem in our city, and we need to make sure it's used at a balanced capacity."

She will say: Do not use the word "privatize," not about White Rock Lake. The city, she says, is merely "exploring opportunities to maximize its potential."

Architect Gerry Worrall III, Sheffie Kadane's appointee to the Park Board and the liaison between the city and the White Rock Foundation, says discussions about bringing food and drink to White Rock Lake have been "casual" to this point. The question, he says, remains: "Do you create something new or take existing facilities and turn them into places where you can eat and drink?"

And that's not an easy question to answer.

Worrall and other White Rock Lake advocates say they're concerned about converting the recently renovated Big Thicket or Winfrey Point into full-time restaurants and bars because, more than anything else, doing so could create an influx of traffic for which the neighborhood isn't prepared. (And the city also says it's making a decent amount of coin leasing out those facilities, among others; calls are to Park and Rec officials.)

"The challenges are many," Worrall says. "There are times when it would be a lovely thing to add. But right now you have special events out there that draw people that overwhelm the park and the neighborhoods, and people ave acclimated to that special use. But if you do a food facility that draws in a certain amount of traffic on a regular basis, that's a different dynamic. There would be support from the pedestrian and bike users; for them it would be ideal. But the neighborhood might have another opinion."

Absolutely, says White Rock Foundation Treasurer Susan Falvo, who represents the Lakewood Neighborhood Association on the White Rock Lake Park Task Force, which consists of dozens of area neighborhood associations. New traffic "is always a concern," says Falvo. "That's why things don't occur there a lot of the time -- because it's everybody's lake."

That's why Worrall's proposing going with food trucks for now, which itself is no easy feat around White Rock. He reminds that there's a whole process in place that involves finding a spot, going through the Park Board, getting the city council's OK ... and so forth. Falvo notes they could appear as soon as the White Rock Lake Festival, which has been moved from May to November 10-11 this year.

"It wouldn't be undertaken casually," Worrall says, "even though these are somewhat temporary in nature. ... But it'd be nice to try those out in different locations around the lake, because it's not permanent and can be eased into and still maintain the beauty of the park around the lake. That's the challenge: creating an environment people want to use and not overwhelm the beauty of the lake."

If anybody can beat the trend of failed team switches among star QBs, it is Peyton Manning.

Call it Second Team Syndrome. It afflicts millions of Americans every year. OK, maybe just two or three a decade. But there?s no known cure. Now Peyton Manning has a case of it.

I am speaking, of course, about that rare condition that involves star quarterbacks who spend most of their careers with one team, then change uniforms in their golden years. Alas, the survival rate is alarmingly low.

Manning probably has a better chance than most of beating it. He turns 36 on Saturday, he?s smart, he?s in relatively good health ? except for the possible after-effects of major neck surgeries, that is ? and he had the good sense to sign on with the Denver Broncos, a team formidable enough to both protect him and provide him with the talent to succeed.

Yet, he?s a quarterback and he?s attempting to recapture the glory of his youthful years spent with his first franchise. Those criteria alone suggest he is predisposed to stumble.

Just consider his ancestors.

Among the most famous in this dubious category is Johnny Unitas. Although he had a brief stint as a Pittsburgh Steeler, he made his reputation through many marvelous years as a Baltimore Colt. His teams won NFL championships in 1958 and 1959, and he was a member of the squad that won Super Bowl V. Unitas was one of the greatest players who ever donned a uniform ? but you wouldn?t have known it by seeing him struggle in San Diego Chargers? togs during the 1973 season. Bad idea.

And the most recent example is Brett Favre. He was a legend as a Green Bay Packer. Technically he started out as an Atlanta Falcon, but didn?t make a mark in his very short time there. Traded to Green Bay, he became a star, taking the Pack to two Super Bowls and winning one.

But he spent one strange and confusing year in 2008 as a New York Jet, and two more controversy-plagued seasons with in Minnesota. In his first year with the Vikings, he led the team to the NFC Championship Game. Bravo. But the second was just a study in elder abuse, as Favre suffered a shoulder injury and a concussion, and his dignity was carried off on a gurney. He also butted noggins with coach Brad Childress in a rather public spat.

There have been other such quarterbacks of lesser note, of course. It?s a hazard of the trade. Quitting ordinarily isn?t associated with honor, except when it applies to star quarterbacks who don?t know when to jog off the gridiron for the last time. In such cases, it?s a capital idea.

That isn?t to say Manning will necessarily flop. On the contrary, he might be the one candidate who defies the second-team destiny laid out for him. Still, there?s that neck.

If he were completely in the pink, there probably would be little doubt as to his prospects for leading the Broncos to a successful season and postseason, maybe even a Super Bowl. But of course, if he didn?t have multiple neck surgeries, he wouldn?t have missed last season, the Colts wouldn?t have the top pick in the draft, and Manning would still be with his original team. His neck is the monkey wrench in this scenario.

The reason QBs with their second teams tend to disappoint is primarily because of age and infirmity, combined with absurd expectations. When Namath went to the Rams, he brought his name, the same one that guaranteed ? and then won ? Super Bowl III. But that?s all he brought. How exactly was Montana ever supposed to leave an imprint in Kansas City that was big enough to equal four Super Bowl victories?

Manning has a capable team around him, and it figures to be even more impressive when a few key free agents sign on. He?s playing in the AFC West, which is there for the taking.

Yet there is also the issue of comfort. In Indianapolis, he was in a system he knew better than those who devised it. He played inside a dome, on artificial turf. He had grown into incumbency and was all powerful.

In Denver, as much as coach John Fox tries to tailor his offense to Manning, it will take some adjustment. Psychologically, Manning should make the leap and play with the same level of confidence in Denver that he established in Indy. But there is no guarantee of that, being human and all.

Different linemen, different receivers, different backs, different coaches. The possibility exists all that might yield different results than Manning is used to.

If anyone can rise above Second Team Syndrome and go on to lead a full and productive football life, it?s Peyton Manning. It?s just important that he and those around him have a frank discussion about what lies ahead.

A positive attitude is always key. If Peyton watches clips of Namath in a Rams uniform, sitting dejectedly on the pine, and declares to himself, ?That won?t be me,? then that?s half the battle right there.

Accused soldier's lawyer plans trip to Afghanistan

Army staff sergeant Robert Bales' lawyer says he needs to gather his own evidence because the government's evidence isn't enough.

The lawyer for the Army staff sergeant suspected of killing 16 Afghan civilians questioned Tuesday the quality of the evidence against his client and said he planned to travel to Afghanistan to gather his own.

John Henry Browne said he met with Robert Bales for 11 hours over two days at Fort Leavenworth, where his client is being held. He added that there was still a lot he didn't know about the March 11 shootings.

"I don't know about the evidence in this case. I don't know that the government is going to prove much. There's no forensic evidence. There's no confessions," Browne said outside his hotel near the post.

"I'm certainly not saying that we're not taking responsibility for this in the right way, at the right time. But for now, I'm interested in what the evidence is," he said. "It's not like a crime scene in the United States."

Browne said there were legal, social and political issues linked to the case and how it will be prosecuted. "The war's on trial. I'm not putting the war on trial," he said. "I'm not putting the war on trial, but the war is on trial."

Bales, 38, has not been charged yet. Browne expects that he will be charged this week. The killings sparked protests in Afghanistan, endangered relations between the two countries and threatened to upend American policy over the decade-old war.

Browne met with his client behind bars for the first time Monday to begin building a defense.

On Tuesday, Browne described Bales as "a soldier's soldier" who followed orders, including deploying to Afghanistan despite not wanting to go. Bales has been reported to have had financial troubles.

"That doesn't mean anything. Sure, there are financial problems. I have financial problems. Ninety-nine percent of America has financial problem," he said. "You don't go kill women and children because you have financial problems."

Browne has said Bales has a sketchy memory of events from before and after the killings but recalls very little or nothing of the time the military believes he went on a shooting spree through two Afghan villages.

"He has some memories of before the incident and he has some memories of after the incident. In between, very little," Browne said.

Browne said there were potential mental health issues for his client, but that he didn't have expertise to make a qualified judgment. "Dragging parts of bodies around is not something that really you forget very often," he said. "He's in shock."

Also Tuesday, a police report obtained by The News Tribune newspaper in Tacoma, Wash., said Bales was arrested in 2002 in the drunken assault of a casino security guard. The details are at odds with a description of the arrest by Browne, who had said it was an incident involving a woman Bales dated before his wife. An assault charge was dismissed after Bales completed 20 hours of anger management training.

Browne, a Seattle attorney who defended serial killer Ted Bundy and a thief known as the "Barefoot Bandit," has said he has handled three or four military cases. The defense team includes a military defense lawyer, Maj. Thomas Hurley.

After their investigation, military attorneys could present charges to a commander, who then makes a judgment on whether there is probable cause to believe that an offense was committed and that the accused committed it.

That commander then submits the charges to a convening authority, who typically is the commander of the brigade to which the accused is assigned but could be of higher rank.
