Oppel: " Romney Blasts Security Leaks as a Betrayal" On the eve of a trip abroad intended to burnish his qualifications to be commander in chief, Mitt Romney accused Obama administration officials on Tuesday of betraying the country by leaking national security secrets for their own political gain and failing to stand up to adversaries like China, Russia and Iran. Mr. Romney's address, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention here, was the most expansive foreign policy speech of his candidacy and opened a new and aggressive attack on President Obama on national security. Roughly 80 percent of all ad spending by Republicans on the general election has come from these super PACs, as Romney has expended a relatively meager $35 million to date on ads in swing states, according to ad buy figures provided to the Fix by a GOP media buyer. Tying the tepid economy at home to weakness abroad, Romney asserted that Obama's "policies have made it harder to recover from the deepest recession in 70 years, exposed the military to cuts that no one can justify [and] compromised our national security secrets." In London, Romney will attend a joint fundraising dinner with other GOP committees where guests will pay up to $75,000 a plate, according to an invitation The Washington Post posted on its website. Bloomberg's Roger Runningen: " Obama Raises Money As Campaign Responds To Romney Attacks" President Barack Obama raised money from supporters in the Pacific Northwest today as he and his campaign organization fired back at Republican Mitt Romney's attacks. Obama, on a three-day swing through five states, plans to collect at least $6.3 million in California, Oregon and Washington, more than half of it today at four fundraisers in Portland, Oregon, and a Seattle, Washington, suburb. The Washington Times' Susan Crabtree: " New Obama ad aims to stanch entrepreneurship remark fallout" After two weeks of political fallout over his comments that self-made entrepreneurs aren't entirely responsible for their own success, President Obama is amplifying previous attempts to clarify the remarks with a new ad accusing Republicans of taking his quotes out of context. The Wall Street Journal's Neil King Jr. and Daniel Lippman: " Obama Keeps Lead as Voter Anxiety Rises" American voters are growing more polarized and locked in their views as they witness a presidential campaign that is boosting negative feelings about both candidates, a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll released Tuesday shows. The poll also finds a resurgence of anxiety about the economy as job growth has slowed, though President Barack Obama maintains his edge on several fronts despite that. Half of registered voters feel less optimistic about the direction of the economy, with just 27% predicting the economy would improve over the next year-a sharp drop in optimism from recent months. Bruce Springsteen, suicidal and depressed in '80s

If you thought most of what could be said about Bruce Springsteen has already been said, perhaps reconsider. David Remnick's 15,000-word profile in the July 30 issue of the New Yorker proves that there's a good bit we didn't know about the 62-year old singer. Among the most notable revelations: Springsteen was at one point suicidal and depressed.

His struggles really came to the surface after the success of albums such as "Born to Run" and "Darkness on the Edge of Town."

"Springsteen was also experiencing intervals of depression that were far more serious than the occasional guilt trip about being 'a rich man in a poor man's shirt,' as he sings in 'Better Days.' A cloud of crisis hovered as Springsteen was finishing his acoustic masterpiece 'Nebraska,' in 1982," Remnick writes in the profile. "He drove from the East Coast to California and then drove straight back.

"'He was feeling suicidal,' Springsteen's friend and biographer Dave Marsh said. 'The depression wasn't shocking, per se. He was on a rocket ride, from nothing to something, and now you are getting your ass kissed day and night. You might start to have some inner conflicts about your real self-worth.'"

Remnick, who shadowed Springsteen during rehearsals for this year's Wrecking Ball tour, visited Springsteen's home in Colts Neck, N.J., and even visited the singer on the European leg of his tour in preparation for the piece, writes that in 1982, Springsteen started seeing a psychotherapist to tackle his harder-to-identify issues.

"My issues weren't as obvious as drugs," Springsteen told Remnick. "Mine were different, they were quieter -- just as problematic, but quieter. With all artists, because of the undertow of history and self-loathing, there is a tremendous push toward self-obliteration that occurs onstage. It's both things: there's a tremendous finding of the self while also an abandonment of the self at the same time. You are free of yourself for those hours; all the voices in your head are gone, just gone..."

Ultimately, and after 30 years of therapy, Springsteen is at peace with his darker side, which fuels the talent that makes him precisely who he is. He explains it to Remnick: "Look, you cannot underestimate the fine power of self-loathing in all of this. You think, I don't like anything I'm seeing, I don't like anything I'm doing, but I need to change myself, I need to transform myself. I do not know a single artist who does not run on that fuel. If you are extremely pleased with yourself, nobody would be f------ doing it! Brando would not have acted. Dylan wouldn't have written 'Like a Rolling Stone.' James Brown wouldn't have gone 'Unh!' He wouldn't have searched that one-beat down that was so hard. That's a motivation, that element of 'I need to remake myself, my town, my audience' -- that desire for renewal."

'Unwanted' Single Women in China Sense The Pressure

Pretty woman Xu, in her 30s, warily strolled into a Beijing singles club in an attempt to get rid of her status as one of China's Unwanted.

Xu had not been to the "Garden of Joy" for more than a year but, with time and societal judgement weighing heavily on her, she returned with cautious hopes.

"I hope to find a husband," she said, as she sat in front of a Mahjong table and awaited her date for the evening, who had been hand-picked for her by the club based on their profiles.

"I just want someone with whom I share things in common, but who is also in a better financial situation than me."

Xu, who did not want to be identified, is one of China's so-called "Sheng Nu".

The term, which translates to the "Unwanted", is derived from a phenomenon in Chinese society which affects hundreds of thousands of women, particularly the urban, educated and financially independent.

The term, which is unique to China and which only applies to women, appears in China's official dictionary and refers to "all single woman above the age of 27".

Twenty-six-year-old Summer was at the Garden of Joy for the first time, desperate to meet a man before she hit the dreaded cut-off age.

"Nothing in the world will allow me to become a Sheng Nu," she said, lamenting that for many men in China youthful looks count for a lot.

"Men don't want a woman over 30. It's important for them that she's still pretty."

A widely publicised survey in 2010 by the government-backed All China Women's Federation proved the new social phenomenon beyond doubt.

The survey showed that there were 180 million single men and women in China -- out of a population of 1.3 billion people -- and that 92 percent of men questioned believed that a woman should be married before the age of 27.

Since then, books and films on the subject have flourished and women's magazines have sought to decipher why so many are single.

"On one hand young people today work very hard and have few places to meet outside of their work, which wasn't the case earlier," Wu Di, a sociologist who has just published a book on the subject, told AFP.

"On the other hand, traditionally the Chinese say one should 'make do' when marrying. Marriage has never been synonymous with happiness.

"The new generation of women don't want to 'make do'. Many live quite well alone and don't see the point in lowering their standard or life in order to marry."

Still, the pressure on women is huge.

Part of this is due to China's one-child population control policy, which adds to the desperation of parents for their only offspring to marry and produce a grandson or granddaughter.

"The real reason for coming to this club is that I don't want to disappoint my parents. I want to make them happy," admitted Xu.

The Garden of Joy's own slogan plays on this emotion in order to attract members. "Are you single? Think about the feelings of your father/mother. Don't cause them more worry," read a sign on the entrance.

And business is booming.

The club, which opened in 2003, has two premises in Beijing and more than 12,000 members.

But, after using fear to lure the women in, the Garden of Joy offers a friendly atmosphere in the basement of a high-end business centre where women can meet prospective husbands with more than 80 different activities.

These include table tennis, billiards, board games, movies and speed dating, or outdoor ventures such as organised hiking trips.

There are also small booths where couples can sit down in a more private setting to get to know each other.

Shelly, 34, a highly educated public relations consultant who had just returned from living in the United States, was among the new members.

Since her return to China, she had avoided her relatives and even some of her close friends because of their insistence in trying to arrange dates for her.

"I'm under pressure from all sides. I feel my mother is disappointed and sad when she sees the grandchildren of her friends," she said.

But with no potential partner on the horizon, Shelly is preparing to return to the United States to do a second Masters degree -- a decision partly motivated by her desire to escape her colleagues, parents and friends.

"I think I will return to China when I am 40. I want right now to be so old, so broken that they will leave me in peace," she said.

Schramko and Moulton have fellow marketing expert Tim Reid as one of their common denominators. Reid?s name comes up several times in the interview as the two swap anecdotes on their respective podcasting experiences.

The discussion, which runs for about 45 minutes, thoroughly covers the topic of podcasting. It answers many beginner questions, such as ?How professional do you need to go for your first podcast??, ?Does a recording studio help??, ?How do you invite interviewees to record with you?? and ?How do you start a podcast??. It also furnishes key information on technical matters such as the Apple iTunes algorithm, podcast plugin installation and retro-adding to iTunes, podcasting formats, etc.

Alluding to the time Schramko guested on the Small Business Big Marketing Show, Moulton lists some of the benefits of his podcasting experience, ?Getting to talk to experts, learning from it, and certainly, building authority as well. It?s been a fabulous vehicle for that.?

Schramko describes that particular guesting stint as his first involvement with a more professional podcast, complete with an official bump-in and a disclaimer bump-out and executed in a professional studio. Upon receiving a wave of sales after the interview, he realized the power of having that audience.

Building an audience is essential in making an effective podcast and Moulton has some tips on how to successfully do that. He points out that consistency is a key factor, advising podcasters to have 4 to 5 shows a month. He also highlights the importance of getting good interviewees with good stories to tell, and then leveraging their audience as well.

Schramko explains, ?Podcast is a traffic source rather than a product. For me, having a traffic source has been really beneficial for the rest of my business.? Both he and Moulton agree that podcasting is a fantastic platform to build authority and trust. It can be a very powerful business tool when done correctly. ?It?s good to have a strategy when you set up a podcast, have an understanding of where it leads to and what comes next,? states Schramko.

Moulton expresses his thoughts on the growth of podcasting. ?I think it?s a growing trend,? he observes. ?Podcasting is a very popular medium to consume content.? He also mentions that with Apple and the way it is going with its technological innovations, podcasting will only keep on increasing in popularity.

The two also discuss the iTunes ranking algorithm, which is not published, unlike the Google algorithm. Moulton shares his conclusions on how an iTunes show can rank well, mentioning the number of people looking at a podcast iTunes profile and subscribing to the feed, as well as frequency of podcast episodes, to be some of the elements that can influence ranking.

The discussion touches on topics such as professional podcasting production values, the double-headed recording technique, podcasting equipment, Facebook campaigns and Authority Leverage, plus many more. When it comes to the option to polarise an audience, Moulton advises, ?I think being yourself, the people who enjoy your format and the way you talk will gravitate to you, and they?re the audience that you want.?

LAS VEGAS: Two Critically Injured in Rollover Crash on Las Vegas ...

LAS VEGAS, Nevada ?? ?Two people were seriously injured after the 2002 Ford Mustang they were riding in crashed early Saturday morning in a rollover collision on Las Vegas Boulevard just south of Puebla Street, according to a KLAS-TV Las Vegas news report.

The driver of the Mustang allegedly lost control of the vehicle about 3:15 a.m. and veered off the roadway before crashing, according to the report. The driver was ejected during the Las Vegas Boulevard crash and was listed in critical condition in the trauma unit at University Medical Center.

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department are investigating the Las Vegas Boulevard car accident to determine its cause.

Docs at odds over kids' cholesterol test guidance

CHICAGO (AP) ? Should all U.S. children get tested for high cholesterol? Doctors are still debating that question months after a government-appointed panel recommended widespread screening that would lead to prescribing medicine for some kids.

Fresh criticism was published online Monday in Pediatrics by researchers at one university who say the guidelines are too aggressive and were influenced by panel members' financial ties to drugmakers.

Eight of the 14 guidelines panel members reported industry ties and disclosed that when their advice was published in December. They contend in a rebuttal article in Pediatrics that company payments covered costs of evaluating whether the drugs are safe and effective but did not influence the recommendations.

It also is not uncommon for experts in their fields to have received some consulting fees from drug companies.

Even so, the ties pose a conflict of interest that "undermines the credibility of both the guidelines and the process through which they were produced," says the commentary by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco. The authors are Dr. Thomas Newman, a researcher and former member of a Food and Drug Administration pediatrics advisory committee, and two heart disease researchers, Drs. Mark Pletcher and Stephen Hulley.

Pletcher has received research funding from drug and device makers; the other authors said they had no relevant industry ties.

Other criticism was published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association. That critique raised concerns about putting children on cholesterol drugs called statins, noting the medicine has been linked with a rare muscle-damaging condition in adults. Those authors were heart specialist Bruce Psaty and pediatrician Frederick Rivara, both of the University of Washington in Seattle.

JAMA included additional criticism from a dissenting member of the panel that produced the kids' cholesterol guidelines, Dr. Matthew Gillman of Harvard Medical School. He recommends more narrow screening based on family history of cholesterol problems.

The guidelines are endorsed by the Academy of Pediatrics, which publishes the journal that carried the critical commentary Monday. The panel recommends that all U.S. children should get blood tests for high cholesterol as early as age 9 and that testing should begin much earlier for kids at risk of future heart disease, including those with diabetes or a family history of heart problems. Treatment should generally begin with lifestyle changes including diet and exercise, the guidelines say.

Cholesterol drugs would be recommended for some kids, but probably less than 1 percent of those tested. But the advice says those drugs, including statins, shouldn't be used at all in children younger than 10 unless they have severe problems.

The guidelines aim to help prevent and treat conditions in children that put them at risk for later heart-related problems. At least 10 percent of U.S. children have unhealthy cholesterol levels and one-third are overweight or obese.

The dispute may leave parents wondering whether to have their kids screened.

Dr. Sarah De Ferranti, an American Academy of Pediatrics spokeswoman and director of preventive cardiology at Boston Children's Hospital, said the question should be part of a conversation parents should have with their pediatrician about heart disease risks, including weight, blood pressure and lifestyle.

"Almost all of us could do better in that area," she said.

"My kids are about to turn 9 and I'm going to have them screened," said De Ferranti, who has a family history of heart disease risks.

Experts on panels that create screening and treatment recommendations for various diseases frequently have at least some financial ties to industry.

"The problem is the people who care about this issue are doing research on it and there's no way to get research done without some involvement of industry," said De Ferranti, who has done industry-funded research herself.

The critics say there's little evidence that widespread cholesterol testing and treatment in children will reduce their chances of having later heart problems. They argue that widespread testing is costly and could cause anxiety in healthy children who don't need treatment.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute appointed the guidelines panel. Dr. Susan Shurin, the institute's acting director, said there are few qualified specialists who have no industry relationships, and that panel members were selected for their expertise.

"We got the best people in the country to do this," Shurin said.

Dr. Stephen Daniels, chairman of the guidelines panel, is pediatrics chief at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He has worked as a consultant or advisory board member for Abbott Laboratories, Merck and Schering-Plough, now part of Merck, and co-authored the Pediatrics rebuttal.

Daniels said industry ties "were vetted during the discussions of the panel and I think really did not influence the debate."

The other rebuttal authors Drs. Brian McCrindle of the University of Toronto, whose industry ties include consulting or serving as advisory board member for Merck and Abbott; Peter Kwiterovich of Johns Hopkins, consulting or advisory board member for Merck and LipoScience; Patrick McBride, University of Wisconsin, who says he has had no relevant industry ties since 2007; and Rae-Ellen Kavey, University of Rochester, who listed no relevant financial ties.

Catholic priests who spend substantial time each week preparing a Sunday homily that will teach, console and inspire their people; priests who are available 24 hours a day for the urgent needs of their sick and dying parishioners; priests who dedicate long hours each week to the confessional are true shepherds of the flock.

Parents who are home with their children; parents who have dinner with their children each night as a family; parents who review every book, every television program and every CD; parents who are dedicated to really parenting their children are true shepherds of their homes.?

True shepherding is a life of total self-giving.? The true shepherd needs time for renewal in order to shepherd the flock.? "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while" (Mark 6: 31).?

The true shepherd needs to spend time daily with Jesus, the chief shepherd.? He will give us the strength, the inspiration and the sustenance to shepherd the flock.?

Periodic moments of solitude and silence are essential for the continued ability to give unconditionally.
