Royal baby: London cabbie drives into history after picking up Duchess of Cambridge's parents from hospital

Tracy Mitchell, from the Isle of Dogs, drove Kate?s mother and father Michael from the Lindo Wing in Paddington to Kensington Palace on Tuesday after they met their grandson, George Alexander Louis, whose name was announced last night.

Mrs Mitchell said that when Mrs Middleton spoke about being ?overwhelmed? by the experience at the end of the journey, she joked: ?Imagine what it was like for me as the taxi driver!? Mrs Middleton replied: ?I?m really sorry.?

The cabbie added: ?Then I laughed and said, ?No, no ? it was very exciting for me.? She laughed, too.?

Excitement: Carole and Michael Middleton Mrs Mitchell, 49, who has been driving her bright blue taxi since January last year, didn?t know who her fare would be when she was called to the hospital. She had been told her passenger?s name was Danielle ? but a press officer briefed her when she pulled up near the hospital doors.

Seeing she was shocked, he wished her luck when she drove off with her passengers a few minutes later.

?It was incredible ? I mean picking up the future king?s grandparents ? it doesn?t get much better than that,? said Mrs Mitchell.

?I have picked up celebrities before, Lily Allen a couple of days ago, Julian Clary, Peter Stringfellow and Russell Grant, but this was the best. I thought, I can?t believe this. I?m going to be part of history.?

The 15-minute journey felt like she was taking her driving test all over again, she said. ?I took them through Hyde Park where there are speed humps. I was conscious of not bumping them about and of slowing down. I was on my best behaviour.?

She congratulated the couple on their good news and did not receive a tip, but said Mr Middleton tried to pay the ?15 fare until she told him it had already been settled on account. They thanked her and she went off to her last job of the day.

William, Kate and George were driven from Kensington Palace yesterday to the Middleton family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, after the Queen met her new great-grandson.

They are also expected to travel to Balmoral soon to spend time with the Duke of Edinburgh, who is recuperating after exploratory surgery. He and the Queen leave for Scotland tomorrow for their summer holiday.

The latest addition to the royal family will become King George VII when he ascends the throne but he may have to wait more than 50 years. Until then he will be known formally as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.

It is understood the Duke and Duchess decided on his names before the Queen ? whose father was King George VI ? arrived for her 30-minute visit, and then discussed it with her.
